We met “Bunny B” (as was marked on her ear) at an Easter event on April 12, 2025. She was the calmest of the group of bunnies and very much enjoyed being held & bonded with our daughter. We spent the entire event in the bunny pen—other kids played and our daughter just sat there holding the bunny. The man who had the rabbits had a sign selling them & over the next week we discussed adding her to our family & when the decision was made, we contacted the man to see if she was available. We drove almost 3 hours out to Girard, KS to pick up the bunny. The man bred rabbits for meat & his entire backyard was full of bunnies in small metal cages. He informed us she was a Californian/Rex and was born on either 1/15/25 or 1/16/25. Well, 1/15 is our daughter’s birthday so that felt like serendipity— and the bunny living conditions were so sad — at that point we knew we had to bring her home instead of letting her go to the butchering block. We drove back home and had her large hutch with extended play yard set up. We named her Bitsy Bunny.
On April 29th, we took her for her vet check up at Hodes Vet Clinic & she received a clean bill of health.
She has only been an indoor bunny & never known living in a tight cramped cage since she came into our family. She took quickly to litter box training. Until this winter, she shared her living quarters with my husband in his home office (the biggest bedroom in the basement), free roaming the full basement when he is at his computer. He then finished out a part of the storage room with sheetrock & laid down some rubber flooring, for the “baseboard” trim set up wood planks she could use as chews. She has been raised with 2 large dogs & 2 (also rather large) cats who all know she is the boss & look forward to their bunny playtime.
For pellets, she eats either Oxbow Organic Bounty or Oxbow Garden Select. She has an endless supply of Timothy hay & we get organic carrot too greens & organic dandelion greens from Whole Foods.
We absolutely adore her, and have never in our entire lives rehomed a pet. All of ours are rescues, and we know the hard work that goes into pet care. This spring, on an emergency need we took in an orphaned 3 week old kitten whose mother had been run over & when he was finally pulled out from under the building he had gone over 7 hours without nursing. We bottle fed him around the clock & while we had plans of only fostering him until he was strong enough for adoption, we foster failed & he is now part of our home as well.
This is where we came to a cross roads & we know deep in our hearts that Bitsy needs rabbit companionship & we are completely unable to take in another pet. If we could get that perfect gem of an affordable home on a few acres, this would not at all even be an issue, we would have a whole space just for her and a bunny friend. As much as it hurts our hearts to come to this decision, we know in our heads it is truly what is best for HER — to find a home that can give her the love & bunny companionship she deserves.
Our prayer is that she is able to be taken in by a rescue or rabbit experienced family. We are absolutely petrified of putting her on marketplace to be used as snake food, or something even more terrifying.
If you are able to help spread the word at all, we would be grateful ❤️ Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, I couldn’t get it any shorter 😭

The best sweetest bunny ever found a new home last night. Thankful for the collaboration with Flufflepuff Rabbit Rescue to find this sweet guy a forever home. Sir William, aka, Sweetheart, was bid a heartfelt farewell and was sent with some of his things so he could feel some comfort and familiarity in his new home including his house and a wooden toy cactus. We miss you buddy, but we hope you’ll have the absolute best life and get all the love and attention the best bunny should get. 💚
