‼️HELP‼️

LOW ON WET CAT FOOD & DOG TREATS!

We go through quite a bit of wet cat food each day in order to keep our cats hydrated & we also have a LOT of senior cats who require soft food as well.

We are low on dog treats too and we use these to help work with the dogs with training, of course it’s one of their most enjoyable things to look forward too.

Lickable treats we have also run out of and we use these a lot for medicating cats and socializing the spicy ones! 🐱

HOOF BONES really help keep the dogs busy when they are in their kennels so they don’t get as bored and start getting destructive (which ends in more accidents or injuries along with money spent for repairs). 🥹

If you are able to help donate towards our cats care we would GREATLY appreciate it!! We typically feed our kitties Friskies Patè - any flavor, and we would be thankful for any kind of wet cat food! We also have a couple cats on Fancy Feast Patè.

Dog treats- Milk bones, small & medium. It’s easier for us to break apart and last longer!

🚨 URGENT: HUCK NEEDS PLACEMENT 🚨

We are desperate to find a home or rescue placement for Huck, a sweet, smart, high-energy boy who has already been through so much. ❤️

Our rescue is currently downsizing and remains closed to intakes as we work tirelessly to find placement for the dogs who are already in our care. Our main focus has been the dogs who have spent YEARS waiting for their chance, but Huck has reached a point where we can’t ignore how much the shelter environment is beginning to affect him.

Huck is one of our newer residents, having been with us for a few months. Before coming to us, he spent over a year running the streets of Leon, KS. He was finally caught and brought to Hickory, and despite spending so much of his young life fending for himself, he has shown us what an incredibly friendly dog he is.

❤️ Huck is friendly with our staff.
🐾 He is not reactive toward other dogs and we believe he could coexist with the right canine companion.
🧠 He is very smart and eager to learn.
🎾 He LOVES toys and treats.
⚡ He is high-energy and needs an outlet for that energy.
🏠 He has excellent kennel habits — he is very good about only pottying outside of his kennel.

Huck is approximately 1–2 years old and is located in Leon, Kansas.

What Huck needs is a real chance.

That could be an adoptive home willing to give him the structure, exercise, patience, and love he needs. Or it could be a rescue/shelter that is better equipped for his needs and has a stronger chance of getting him seen and adopted.

We know Huck can be a lot of dog. He is young, energetic, smart, and still learning how to be a dog after spending so much of his life on the streets. But we also know that the shelter is not where he should spend the rest of his life.

We are worried about him. 💔 The longer he stays, the more the stress of shelter life is beginning to take a toll.

We are asking our community to please share Huck. We need someone to see the amazing dog underneath all that energy and give him the opportunity he deserves.

📣We wanted to give a Shout-Out to Hickory Hollow Animal Refuge Foundation! They are doing great things! They are located in a small Kansas community, which we totally get! If you are looking for a new furever friend, be sure to check them out!

These fine folks took excellent care of River before transferring him to our facility. He is a super sweet guy and we will work hard to find his furever home! Thank you for taking in pets who need you!

UPDATE!!

River was able to transfer to Wellington Humane Society Serving Sumner County last week!!

Francis was adopted and went to a wonderful home & Loki was adopted by one of our staff members!!

We are so happy for them but we still have 10 dog's looking for their forever homes!

Loki's brother Toby has been waiting 4 years & we are so desperate to get this good boy out of the shelter!!

Toby came to Hickory 4 years ago with his brother Loki after they were surrendered by a family member. They were about 10 months old at the time, which makes Toby about 5 years old now.
Toby has previously been adopted twice, but unfortunately, both adoptions ended in returns due to circumstances that were out of his control. His first family had unexpected circumstances arise, and his second family had only given him a day before deciding their other dog wasn’t thrilled and bringing Toby back right away. 😥
A return to the shelter is incredibly hard on a dog, but we truly believe Toby would thrive in the right home. He is still very loving with humans. He can be a little shy at first, but once he warms up, he is a total lover. He’s great with other dogs and cats, and he is good with kids as well!

Toby LOVES his toys and insists on keeping them close when other dogs are around. It’s his one comfort he can hold onto while he’s in the shelter. Of course, with the right training and approach, we are sure he could learn to adjust and share his toys—or simply coexist with other dogs and toys around him once he has had time to settle in and feel secure.
Toby also has storm anxiety and has anxiety medication that we give him when the weather is bad. He has shown that he can relax more when the weather is rough as long as he is inside and not out in it at all. He lets us know very easily that he would prefer not to go on a walk if the weather is not to his liking. I’m sure if he were in a home with a hooman there to give him cuddles while it storms, it would help comfort him so much more.
Toby is a big, goofy sweetheart, and this perfect pooch has been waiting for his family for far too long. 🥺💔

He deserves someone who will give him the time, patience, understanding, love, and security he needs to finally feel at home.

Please don’t let Toby spend another day wondering when his family is coming. Share his story, and help us find his forever home. 🐾❤️

This Saturday we would love to see as many people come out as possible. We also love to see any of our previous hickory residents. If you adopted one of our dogs bring them out for a walk in the park. Can’t wait to see you there!!

Although our main focus has been getting our dogs socialized and adopted, we still have over 40 cats to care for as well!!!

💙 RIVER HAS WAITED LONG ENOUGH. 💙

900+ DAYS. That’s how long this sweet 4-year-old Bluetick Coonhound mix has been waiting for someone to choose him.

River came to us with his friend, Gracie, after the two were found running loose in Goddard for several days. They had escaped a home that had become overwhelmed and overrun with dogs. What was supposed to be a temporary stop for River has turned into more than 900 days of waiting for a family of his own.

And we know River is worth the wait. 🥺💙

River can be a little shy when he first meets you, but give him some time, patience, and kindness, and you’ll see the sweetheart underneath that initial hesitation. Once he trusts you, River absolutely LOVES his people and is happiest when he can be close to them.

🐾 A few of River’s favorite things:

Going on walks and following all the interesting smells
Exploring new places
Splashing through puddles and creeks
Bones, squeaky balls, and stuffies — he LOVES his toys!
Lots of love, attention, and cuddles

River is house-trained and kennel-trained, and he is capable of living with other dogs with a proper, thoughtful introduction. He tends to prefer female dogs and isn't particularly interested in constantly playing with another dog — he’s more of a “do my own thing” kind of guy who may enjoy some occasional companionship.

Because River is a hound with a high prey drive, he needs a home without small animals.

🏡 River’s ideal home:

He would thrive with an active family who can give him walks, adventures, enrichment, and plenty of affection. More than anything, River needs someone who understands that transitioning into a new home takes time. He needs patience, consistency, understanding, and someone willing to learn and grow alongside him.

And there is another reason we are sharing River again.

We are still downsizing. We have multiple dogs who have been waiting far too long — some for years, just like River — and we desperately need to find homes sooner rather than later.

These dogs deserve the chance to experience what life outside of a kennel feels like. They deserve families, couches, routines, adventures, and someone who wakes up every morning excited that they are theirs.

River has already given us more than 900 days of his life waiting. We don't want him to have to wait another 900.

If you have ever looked at a dog and thought, “I wish someone would just give him a chance,” please consider being that person for River.

💙 River is ready. He just needs someone willing to be patient enough to let him show them who he is.
