Hang in there! Happy Labor Day weekend! Before you scramble off for adventure, we just wanted to share our hours and well wishes: We hope that everyone has a safe, comfortable, and carefree break from the stressors of life. We hope that you get to spend some much needed time enjoying the incredible animals we are all so lucky to provide care for (and we'd love to see your pictures commented below)! And be SAFE so you can continue to enjoy them for as long as possible. New travel opportunities, places, animals, and people can all be big stressors for our pets. Try to be mindful of this as you venture out this holiday!

This is a friendly reminder that over the holiday, we are open for appointments as follows:

Friday 9/4: 9-4 (regular)

Saturday 9/5: appointments from 9-1 (regular)

Sunday 9/6: emergencies only on a case-by-case basis

Monday 9/7: Closed - We are taking a much needed day of rest!

Tuesday 9/8: Regular closed day

Wednesday 9/9: We will resume normal business hours (9-4)

There have been a few small changes happening behind the scenes of At Peace lately. πŸ’œπŸ’š

After having one too many tearful families run short for tissues, I decided it was our business to make sure all aspects of not only the pet's experience, but the families' experience are taken care of. Because I really do want your experience to be centered around you and your pet - nothing should get in the way of that moment. Especially not needing to blow your nose because you can't imagine another day without your baby.

So without further ado, I've been working on new business cards, materials for our veterinary clinic partners, and even little tissue packets for families β€” because when your work is helping people through one of the hardest days of loving a pet, the little things matter too.

This will always be the heart of At Peace: a medically tailored approach for pets, & a warm hug and gentle words for the people who love them.

Pictured: A familiar home. A beloved pet surrounded by their person. A peaceful goodbye, with as much kindness, dignity, and love as we can possibly fit into it.

I'm so grateful for every family who trusts me to be there for this part of their pet's story. πŸ’œπŸ’š

Every family says goodbye differently:

Some provide flowers.
Some bring favorite treats.
Some tell stories.
Some play music.
Some write letters to be cremated and some choose to stop and read them aloud.

There isn't a "right" way to say goodbye.
There is only the need to share our love in so many ways.
And love has a thousand different languages.

Thank you to every family who trusts me to witness one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. It is never something I take for granted.

Some souls leave pawprints so quietly that we don't realize how deeply they've become part of our story until it's time to say goodbye.

This sweet girl spent her life wrapped in love, sunshine, and the comfort of home. Though her family wished for more time, her final chapter was filled with the same devotion that defined every chapter before it.

As her parents prepare for a beautiful new beginning this week, we are reminded that love and grief often walk hand in hand. The love we carry forward is shaped by every heart that helped us become who we are.

Run free, beautiful girl. 🀍 πŸ’šπŸŒˆ

Today's patient (Moose) enjoyed fresh air & sunshine β˜€, watching geese πŸ¦†, exploring familiar scents, and spending time with family before his in-home visit. These moments of comfort and normalcy are the reason that in-home euthanasia can look so different from an in-office appointment at a traditional facility. βš•

We're honored to help families create peaceful, personalized experiences in end of life care for pets at home in the greater Milwaukee, Brown Deer, Oak Creek, areas, and beyond. πŸŒ…πŸŒ»πŸŒˆ

While incredibly cute and delivered so well, this video highlights something that is very important and relevant to all large dog owners. When our beloved pets reach an age or physical state where their hind end starts to fail, many dog owners are left unprepared. It is incredibly important to be physically prepared for your pets to reach this state. It is just as important to work on strength and mobility with your adult pets before they reach this point, so that they can live as happy and healthy a life with you for as long as possible! If your pet is having mobility issues and you have questions, reach out to your primary Care veterinarian or schedule a chronic care/ hospice appointment with our service.

I wanted to express my deepest gratitude for the owners that I have the privilege to work with. Your love, dedication, and care for your pets makes all of this possible. Without incredible families who love their pets enough to prioritize their well-being and to do anything possible to reduce their stress and discomfort, we would not exist.
To this incredibly kind owner who dedicated a gift in memory of their pet, and in dedication to Dr. Tessa Brown's services with At Peace Home Veterinary Care, I can only say that I was so moved, and deeply honored.

β˜€οΈ HEAT + SENIOR PETS β˜€οΈ

As temperatures rise, subtle changes in our senior dogs and cats can become much more noticeable β€” and sometimes they’re the first sign your pet may need extra support.

🐾 Watch for:
β€’ Sleeping much more than usual
β€’ Increased panting or faster breathing, or breathing with the full body (abdomen and chest)
β€’ Difficulty getting up or walking (or laying down/refusing to move forward on a walk)
β€’ Less interest in food or water
β€’ Hiding, confusion, or seeming β€œoff”
β€’ Accidents in the house or litter box changes
β€’ Restlessness at night
β€’ Trouble tolerating walks or normal activity

Heat can make arthritis pain, heart disease, kidney disease, cognitive decline, and mobility issues much harder for aging pets.

πŸ’œ Small changes matter.
Many families assume β€œthey’re just getting old,” but comfort-focused care can often make a tremendous difference in quality of life.

Ways to help:
🌿 Keep pets indoors during peak heat - especially our friends with flat faces such as pugs and bulldogs (brachycephalic breeds)
🌿 Offer multiple water stations
🌿 Use fans, cooling mats, or air conditioning - do not try to cool off your dog with ice cold water as they do not sweat
🌿 Shorten walks and avoid hot pavement
🌿 Add rugs or traction mats for weak legs
🌿 Monitor breathing and energy closely

Senior pets are incredibly good at hiding discomfort. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is slow down enough to notice the quiet changes.
