April 9th we helped out a local pet owner who had a very sick kitty. This babe had dropped down to skin and bones and given she was not that old, clearly something was very, very wrong.

After we drew her blood, we right away knew this was very bad. Normally plasma is transparent and even before the machine processed the chemistry panel, we knew this little girl needed to be put out of her suffering. Likely, this was a case of FIP and it would have taken her life within days or weeks in the most unkind way.

After a call to her owner, I held her while we sedated her and sent her to heaven. I am glad she is now in a better place.

We can't often afford to help out privately owned animals with anything other than spay/neuter, but I always try to find a way when there is in an animal in need.

Including blood work, euthanasia, and cremation-
the bill for this girl was $170.

Yesterday was another unplanned clinic day but Dr. Lindsey had space to squeeze in a few things so I said, yes please!

Rudy, Roxy, and Sable made the trip with me and, as always, got the very best care.

Sable was spayed and rabies vaccinated after a full exam. She was in heat but because we have the best vet on earth, she isn't afraid of a dog in heat. As always, surgery went great and today Sable acts like nothing even happened.

Roxy had a full exam and was rabies vaccinated. Because we found what appears to a spay scar, she got to just hang out with us for the day and go to forego anesthesia.

Rudy the old man coonhound has been a tad broken since the day we got him so we keep him maintained and he doesn't seem to have a care in the world. 18 months ago when he came to us, he was treated for a plethora of wounds and bone issues. Yesterday he got a full dental with several extractions. He has been struggling with nerve damage and edema that comes and goes in his legs, causing him to chew on his joints when they feel off to him. His edema is a lymphatic issue so he was started on some medications indefinitely so that we can help support his old man skeleton which clearly was used and abused in his past. He has turned into such a sweet and loving guy that even the vets commented on his demeanor. No muzzles and no bite attempts like back in the day when he first started getting treatment there. He is permanently reformed and was happy as a clam for all the attention he got at the clinic.

Welcome ✨Sable✨ to Critters Inc!

Thursday April 30th was a hectic clinic day. Unfortunately that was the day I dropped my phone in the gravel parking lot at the clinic while loading cats. It was already around 7 pm at that time so I went back inside to check messages from the clinic phone before I got on the road. I had multiple voicemails from out of state travelers stating there was a white dog in the road on Hwy 270 north of Hartville following cars all day and that it didn't look like it was doing well.

I got fuel and started on the 2+ hour drive home. I drive right through that location on my way to and from the clinic. I figured by that hour the dog would no longer be there but I would keep watch just in case. Sure enough, I got less than a mile north of Kindness Ranch and saw a car pulled over with flashers on. I pulled off in front of them and immediately a big white dog and 2 young gals all came into view in the road.

If you have ever traveled that stretch of road at night, you know how incredibly dark and barren it is. I hopped out and introduced myself. Two of the nicest gals I've ever met had been out in the very chilly night air feeding this girl milkbones and desperately trying to get her caught. These girls were traveling from Laramie to Newcastle and I was so impressed by how educated they were on animal welfare and how determined they were to get this girl to safety.

The 3 of us made a plan, and with chattering teeth because we were all freezing, we spent well over an hour trying to gain this big girl's trust. She would come close and then dart away. She would go up to the vehicles to investigate and then wander away. But no matter what we did, she would not get out of the road. We held our breath when a semi truck passed without even tapping the brakes and with each passing minute, it seemed like we were never going to succeed.

All of a sudden, as often is the case, she decided to give up and hopped right into the backseat of their car. I ran and grabbed a dog kennel out of my bus and we guided her right into it. Success!!!!

These girls, Grace and....(I am so embarassed to say I can't remember the other name) were some of the coolest, kindest, most awesome people I have met in a long time. Amazing how a lost dog on the side of the road at 10 pm in pitch black chilly air, can bring new friends together. These gals had a dog leash and milkbones in their car not because they had a dog, but because they had heard you should just in case you come across a situation exactly like this one. Girls, if you see this, please give yourself a pat on the back and remind me of the other name! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Sable has been with us now for about 6 weeks and after a very slow start with growling, some snaps, breaking out of her kennel, guarding her food, and being overall tense and unsure, I am happy to report that just like on that night, she has all of a sudden decided she is safe. She does beautifully with the other dogs of all sizes, shapes, and colors. She "speaks" to the other dogs in an appropriate manner when they get too close to her food or are too energetic in her space, and she wiggles with excitement any time we get close enough for pets and cuddles.

The saddest part is, she is not young, likely 3 or 4, has a collar on, knows some basic commands, and most certainly was someone's dog. Could she be a stray that got lost and her owner has not put up any ads or called looking for her? Sure. Is it far more likely that she was dumped out front of Kindness Ranch thinking they take in local animals and that's why she refused to get out of the road and tried to follow every car that went by? Yes.

No matter what her story was to this point, we can say the rest of her story will be one of love and safety.

This coming Tuesday she goes in for her spay (unless she is already spayed), and her full exam and health check. This will cost about $125 (spay, e-collar, rabies vaccine, pain meds).

For my colony feeders and cat owners I just wanted to make sure you knew about this. Many of you spend a fortune on cat food every month just like we do!

With the family's permission, I share with you the loss of a cat lover. Although I did not know Jason, I did have the pleasure of meeting numerous members of his family both recently and over the years through my spay/neuter work in the community. I have always thought there is a special place in heaven for those who are kind to animals and I am certain he is there.

The family graciously chose Critters Inc as their in memoriam beneficiary and today I also received a beautiful card and donation from them in the mail.

Hugs to this family. Now the kitties have another guardian angel watching over them.

The boxes have been pouring in the last 3 days and there are still a few more on the way!

We were going to build a fort but it's been a tad windy. 😉

Friends,

It's time for another talk. We are in the midst of kitten season. The classifieds are flooded with ads from people giving away kittens of all ages, shapes, sizes, and colors. It literally makes me ill when I see those posts. Don't even get me started on the people giving away animals under 8 weeks of age, which is illegal in some states for good reason, but sadly not ours.

I see the comments and the majority of them say....

"Oh how cute!"
"I wish there were more homes."
"I wish I could have one."
"Are they free?"

Let's cut away all the splitting hairs and wishing and hoping and get down to one thing.....the solution.

Shelters are not overwhelmed because of animal abuse, neglect, or any other reason. Shelters are overwhelmed because of animal birth. Period.

How do we stop animal birth? Spay/neuter.

So here comes Jane Doe with her cat. The cat has an oops litter but she "finds them all homes" and then calls us to spay her cat. Problem solved right?

ABSOLUTELY NOT

Now instead of one household having an intact cat, now that person just planted 2-8 seeds out in the community creating households with intact cats. And that exponential basic mathematical equation is the reason why we are drowning in cats in our area and beyond.

Am I glad when people call me for spay/neuter? Absolutely!!!

Am I glad when they call me and say....my cat recently had kittens so I need to get her spayed. Folks, that is where we are missing the boat. Yes, I will take mom and all her babies in for spay/neuter but now we are looking at cost for 3-9 surgeries instead of 1 and those numbers are now added to the overpopulation.

The bottom line is this. If you have an intact animal of any age in your possession or hanging out on your property it is your job to ensure that that animal never reproduces for any reason. Same goes for dogs.

So do I want you to call me for help? Yes!✅

Will my vet and I drop what we are doing to spay a pregnant cat last minute! Yes!✅

Will I make a special trip for just one animal if they can't wait until our next scheduled clinic day? Yes!✅

Will I find a way to pay for it if you cannot? Yes!✅

But like I always say....call me when you see cats, don't wait until you see kittens.

Take responsibility. Take action. No more excuses.

March and April were a bit of a blur with tons of clinic days and trips back east to help with my moms, along with transitioning to a new Critters phone so all the photos ended up on 3 different devices. I keep threatening to get all those things posted and caught up and I think I finally have it all sorted out so here goes!

The morning of April 10th I was busy returning cats from the big clinic day we had done the day before when I got a call, email, and text from a Wheatland business owner. She and her family had found a juvenile kitten out front of their shop in the middle of the street and had posted it to the classifieds seeking help. I had already phoned the clinic once that morning to let them know I had 2 more pregnant cats for immediate spay that I had been unable to catch the day before so a return trip to the vet was already on the schedule. I phoned them a second time after I picked up this babe.

The finder brought the kitten to me so that I could get on the road right away, which was a huge help. I have been doing this work for a very long time and the minute I opened the box, I knew this wasn't just your average sick kitten. This was something else.

I always tell people, rabies and other types of zoonotic diseases are alive and well and safe handling is a must. This is why all animals that enter shelters are quarantined and why people like myself are vaccinated against rabies. With the neurologic symptoms this kitten was exhibiting, I knew it needed to be euthanized and sent in for testing right away since numerous people had already handled it.

After arriving at the vet, we sedated this babe, and before we even had a chance to euthanize it, it passed. This baby was suffering in unimaginable ways and I was relieved to see that suffering end.

After examination at the state vet lab it was determined that this babe was negative for rabies, thank goodness, but had advanced meningitis. Not a disease we see often but an awful one nonetheless. Lord only knows how long this baby wandered the streets in pain.

Charges for this babe was $15 at our vet plus $53.75 shipping charges and an additional $145 for the testing and necropsy at the state vet lab.
