Spring has sprung!....well, sort of. Did you know that Cushings disease, or pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) is the most common endocrine disorder in older horses, affecting 20-25% of horses over the age of 15? Common signs of Cushings include excessively long/curly haircoat, decreased topline muscle, decreased immune function, lethargy, and increased thirst and urination. This disease can have a significant impact on affected horses, particularly carrying an increased risk for laminitis due to insulin dysregulation.
Great news for those managing Cushings disease in their horse, there is now a commercially available generic tablet of pergolide available! This makes treating Cushings more affordable than Prascend with more consistent results than compounded medications. If your horse is currently on pergolide, ask us about Zygolide!
If your horse is over the age of 12-14 and has not been tested recently, spring is a great time to screen bloodwork (ACTH level) for Cushings, so consider this at your horse's next visit.

We are getting a lot of questions about what to do with turning horses out and this unfortunate ice.

The method we have seen on farms that works the best is to have someone with a skid steer, bobcat, etc. clear the top layer of ice from the paddock. If there is still the smooth ice layer left on the paddock, horses have been slipping on the top or getting skin abrasions around their heels by punching through.

With the temperature forecasts, even if we get some thawing there will be refreezing again for the foreseeable future.

We have some contacts of people that can clear paddocks for you if you need information. We have also seen several people advertising this service on the local horse network Facebook forums.

Hopefully this information helps get your horses back out as soon and safely as possible.

If your horse does become injured on the ice, we are always here to help in an emergency. Please call 240-532-9362.
