🚨🐾 National Disaster Preparedness Month 🐾🚨

September is National Disaster Preparedness Month, and living in Colorado, we know all too well how quickly an emergency can change everything.

The devastating wildfires our state has experienced are an important reminder that when it’s time to evacuate, there may not be much time to gather what you need. And that includes your pets. ❤️

Take some time this month to make an emergency plan for your animals:

🐶🐱 Keep carriers, leashes, and collars easily accessible
💊 Have a supply of medications on hand
💧 Keep food and water in an emergency kit
📋 Keep vaccination and medical records somewhere you can quickly access them
🏷️ Make sure microchip and ID information is up to date
🏠 Know where you can safely take your pets if you need to evacuate
🐴 If you have livestock or horses, have a plan for them too

Most importantly, don't wait until an evacuation order is issued to figure out where your animals are going. A little preparation now can save precious time when every minute matters.

Your emergency plan should include every member of your family, including the ones with four paws, hooves, feathers, or scales. 🐾❤️

💚 September is National Su***de Prevention Month 💚

Veterinary medicine is a profession built around caring for others, but sometimes the people doing the caring need someone to check on them, too.

Veterinarians, technicians, assistants, receptionists, kennel staff, managers, and everyone else who keeps a veterinary hospital running can face unique pressures: compassion fatigue, burnout, long hours, difficult cases, euthanasia, financial stress, client conflict, and the emotional weight of caring deeply for animals and their families.

The CDC recognizes that veterinary professionals have an increased risk of su***de, making mental health and su***de prevention an important part of veterinary workplace wellbeing.

This month, we're going to spend a week talking about mental health in veterinary medicine.

We'll share statistics, talk about some of the challenges our profession faces, and most importantly, remind each other that asking "Are you okay?" can be one of the most important things we do.

You don't have to carry everything alone. 💚

🐾🤧 Pet Allergies Can Look Like A LOT of Different Things!

When you hear "pet allergies," you might picture a dog scratching nonstop. But allergies don't always announce themselves that obviously!

Depending on the cause, pets can show allergies in all kinds of ways, including:

🐾 Constant scratching or licking
🐾 Chewing at their paws
👂 Red, itchy, or recurring ear infections
🐶 Rubbing their face or ears
🩹 Red, irritated, or inflamed skin
✂️ Hair loss or thinning fur
🐱 Excessive grooming or pulling out fur
🔴 Recurrent skin or yeast infections
💩 Vomiting, diarrhea, or other digestive changes
🌿 Symptoms that get worse during certain seasons

Environmental allergens, food allergies, and flea allergies can all cause different patterns of symptoms, and sometimes allergies can look a lot like other skin or medical problems. That's why figuring out the "why" behind the itching is important!

If your pet has been scratching, licking, chewing, or dealing with recurring ear or skin problems, don't just assume they're being itchy.

🐱❤️ Animal Pain Awareness Month: Cats Hide Pain

Cats are incredibly good at hiding when something hurts. A cat may not cry or limp, but you might notice smaller changes like:

🐾 Not jumping onto their favorite spots
🐾 Sleeping more
🐾 Having trouble climbing stairs
🐾 Being less playful
🐾 Grooming less
🐾 Acting grumpy or withdrawn

Osteoarthritis can be painful for cats, and just because your cat is getting older doesn't mean they have to live with chronic pain.

🚨🐶 Spaying & Neutering: It’s About More Than Preventing Puppies! 🐶🚨

Spaying your female dog can help prevent pyometra, a serious and potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus.

We recently had a pyometra case at our Cañon City location where the infected uterus weighed **2 POUNDS.** 😳

That’s TWO POUNDS of infection that was sitting inside this poor pup. This is why routine preventive care and spaying can be so important. ❤️

Pyometra can progress quickly and can become an emergency. If your female dog is unspayed, talk with your veterinarian about whether and when spaying is appropriate for her.

And for our male pups, neutering can also provide important health and population-control benefits.
