Happy World Parrot 🦜 Day

Oceania & Asia are kicking off their World Parrot Day celebrations! 🌏🦜

From New Zealand's Kākā to Indonesia's Critically Endangered Mitchell's Lorikeet, this region is home to two of this year's Parrot of the Year candidates and countless other remarkable parrots.

Founded by the World Parrot Trust in 2004, World Parrot Day celebrates parrots while raising awareness for the challenges they face in the wild. Today, nearly 1 in 3 parrot species is threatened with extinction, making that mission more important than ever.

Throughout the weekend, we'll be sharing stories from conservationists, partners, and parrot lovers around the world, highlighting the people and projects helping parrots thrive.

💚 Wherever you are in the world, thank you for celebrating with us. Follow along as World Parrot Day travels across the globe and discover the incredible diversity of a world full of parrots.

💚🌿 AVAILABLE FOR PLACEMENT: Meet Artemus 🌿💚

Some parrots are content sitting around waiting for life to happen.
Artemus is not ❌ one of those parrots.
This beautiful young GCC/Dusky Conure hybrid is curious, intelligent, adventurous, and always looking for her next project. If there’s a puzzle to solve, a toy to dismantle, or a hidden treat to discover, Artemus is already three steps ahead.
Born in March of 2024, Artemus is still young and full of personality. She approaches life with enthusiasm, confidence, and just the right amount of mischief.
✨ DNA Sexed Female
✨ Excellent flyer
✨ Food motivated
✨ Loves showers
✨ Foraging enthusiast
✨ Enjoys enrichment and problem solving
✨ Pistachios and almond slices are favorite treats
✨ Smart, playful, and endlessly curious
❣️One thing that makes Artemus extra special is her love of foraging.
In her previous home, food wasn’t simply placed in bowls. She learned to work for it, search for it, and engage her brilliant little mind throughout the day. Because of that, Artemus thrives when given opportunities to forage, shred, explore, and stay busy.
In fact, if Artemus could write her own placement ad, she’d probably say:
💚 “Please don’t just feed me. Challenge me.”
She’s the kind of bird who wants to participate in life, not simply watch it happen from a cage.
Like many intelligent parrots, Artemus will do best with a caregiver who understands enrichment, positive reinforcement, and the importance of keeping active minds engaged.
She isn’t looking for a cage.
She isn’t looking for a perch.
She’s looking for an adventure partner.

If you’ve been searching for a bright, active, engaging companion who will keep you smiling and constantly entertained, Artemus may be the perfect addition to your family.

Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that parrots have bones in their tongue?

The Hyoid apparatus is a specialized structure within a parrot’s tongue, composed of bones and cartilage. It gives the parrot’s tongue extra rigidity and dexterity, allowing them to use their tongue as a tool to manipulate food and other objects, as well as produce complex sounds.

Today's photo features Rosie, a sweet sulphur-crested cockatoo who is currwntly looking for a home! 🦑🤍 AVAILABLE FOR PLACEMENT: Meet Squidney 🤍🦑
(Yes… Squidney. And yes, the personality matches the name.)

If you’ve ever dreamed of sharing your life with a feathered toddler who occasionally believes they run the household, may have strong opinions, and can switch from cuddly sweetheart to tiny dinosaur in 0.2 seconds… Squidney may be your bird.
This handsome assumed male Umbrella Cockatoo joined Rhode Island Parrot Rescue after his previous caregiver struggled to understand cockatoo behavior. And honestly? We get it. Cockatoos are not always easy birds.

What we’ve learned about Squidney so far:
✨ Loves children
✨ Completely unfazed by dogs
✨ Chatty and enjoys interaction
✨ Says “I love you” (which should probably come with a warning label)
✨ LOVES chew toys
✨ Highly food motivated — shelled walnuts and almond slices rank high
✨ A bit picky with veggies
✨ Arrived overweight and is working toward a healthier lifestyle
✨ Came from a home with two dogs and a male & then female caregiver.

Squidney is sweet, engaging, funny, and incredibly expressive… but like many cockatoos, he will need someone willing to understand body language, boundaries, the importance of training and reinforcement, enrichment, and all of the big feelings these birds carry.
He is looking for patience.
Consistency.
Education.
And someone who understands that trust with a cockatoo is earned — and absolutely worth it.
The right home will see beyond the crest, the noise, and the occasional chaos… and recognize a brilliant companion underneath.
If you think you may be Squidney’s person, we’d love to talk.
