Today, we’re sending a heartfelt—and extremely well-deserved—WICKED AWESOME THANK YOU to two wonderful members of the RIPR family: Ray and Jodi C.! 💚
Ray and Jodi share their home with two beloved RIPR alumni’s, Chloe and Tweety, but their love for our birds extends far beyond their own parrots.
Ray spends hours over several days cutting, shaping and drilling large quantities of wooden blocks in a variety of sizes. Then Jodi—one of the sweetest people you could ever meet—turns those pieces into beautiful toys for the birds! 💚 they also bring in boxes of drilled wood for us to create more toys.
With more than 120 birds currently on-site at RIPR, trust us—we go through A LOT of toys! 😂 Toys provide essential enrichment, giving parrots opportunities to chew, forage, explore, problem-solve, play and express natural behaviors. And our most enthusiastic wood-destroying professionals can turn hours of work into toothpicks in record time! 😂
Ray and Jodi’s generosity saves RIPR significant time and expense while helping us keep our flock happy, healthy and engaged.

Very sad. But very true!

The enormous volume of unwanted parrots being fielded by the rescue community indicates an epidemic failure of parrots as pets. But whose failure is it, really? We as humans have done everything in our power to manipulate parrots and to alter and change them to fit better into our lives. Clip their wings and confine them to cages... Remove them from their families and from their flocks and instead try to fit them into ours... Reject their language and expect them to recite our words... Genetically alter their colors and the contours of their feathers to create designer birds... We render them utterly dependent upon us and then, when we find we cannot entirely eradicate the true nature of the animal, we abandon them. Some of these parrots will find their way to a sanctuary or rescue organization. Millions will not.

Pepper and Melon are two little lovebirds with a pretty special bond. They came to us in April as part of the large New Hampshire rescue, along with dozens of other birds—many of them lovebirds who arrived with injuries, chronic conditions, or disabilities.

With so many lovebirds coming from the same situation, we had to carefully separate them into smaller groups based on their individual needs and injuries. Pepper and Melon were originally housed with other lovebirds but unfortunately found themselves being picked on. Because of their safety concerns, and especially Pepper’s disabilities, we decided to give these two their own space together and hoped they would get along.

It turns out they were exactly what each other needed.
Pepper and Melon quickly became inseparable. You can almost always find them cuddled up together, sleeping side by side, or simply enjoying each other’s company. After everything they experienced before coming to us, seeing these two find comfort and security in one another has been incredibly sweet.

Pepper is yellow and green with rosy cheeks. Pepper has several lasting effects from previous injuries, including part of the lower right side of the beak missing, a stiff left knee that does not fully extend, and a descended left eye. Despite these differences, Pepper continues to get around and enjoy life with Melon close by.
Melon is mostly green with a beautiful pink face and has become Pepper’s little companion and cuddle buddy.

Because of the bond they have formed, Pepper and Melon are looking for a forever home together. We would love to see them continue their next chapter side by side, where Pepper’s individual needs can be understood and accommodated and these two can continue feeling safe together.

Sometimes family is the friend you find along the way. For Pepper and Melon, they seem to have found that in each other.

Maggie is a beautiful Blue and Gold Macaw who came to us in April along with several other birds as part of a large rescue in New Hampshire. Unfortunately, we don’t know much about Maggie’s life before coming into rescue, but we’ve been getting to know more of her personality every day.

And Maggie certainly has a lot of personality! She is a very chatty girl who loves to greet everyone with a big “Hello!” She is lovely to have around and always seems to have something to say.

One of Maggie’s favorite things is being outside of her cage. We believe she may not have had a cage in her previous home, so she really enjoys having the freedom to come out, stretch those big beautiful wings, and spend time with the people around her.

Maggie would love a home where she can continue to have plenty of supervised time outside of her cage, room to stretch her wings, and lots of interaction. She enjoys being part of what’s going on around her and makes for some pretty entertaining company with all of her chatter.

There is still plenty for us to learn about Maggie, but one thing we already know is that she is a special girl who deserves a loving home where she can spread her wings and begin her next chapter.

🦜 We Think the ri_spca Campers Were Paying Attention! 💚
Recently, Rhode Island Parrot Rescue had the opportunity to visit the RISPCA summer campers and spend some time talking with them about parrots, rescue, and the importance of enrichment for keeping those incredibly smart minds and busy beaks happy and healthy.
Then, after our visit, we received the BEST thank-yous!
The campers sent us the sweetest handmade thank-you notes and drawings — but they didn’t stop there. They also put what they learned into action and created an incredible collection of handmade toys and enrichment for our flock! 🦜
We had so much fun looking through everything they made. There are opportunities for shredding, chewing, foraging, exploring, and problem-solving throughout their creations. It was pretty clear that they really listened and understood just how important enrichment is in a parrot’s life.
And we have to say… they absolutely nailed it! 👏
A huge thank you to the RISPCA staff and campers for inviting us to spend time with you, for being such an engaged and enthusiastic group, and for this incredibly thoughtful surprise afterward. Your notes made us smile, and your creativity is going to make a whole lot of parrots very happy!
Of course, our flock will be showing their appreciation in the traditional parrot way:
By lovingly destroying all of your hard work. 😂🦜

💚PICO & RIO: TWO BROTHERS LOOKING FOR A HOME WHERE THEY CAN JUST BE BIRDS 💚
Not every parrot dreams of spending the day sitting on someone’s shoulder.
Not every parrot wants hands reaching for them.But, Not every relationship with a parrot has to be built around touching. Meet Pico & Rio.
These two Quaker brothers came to Rhode Island Parrot Rescue almost two years ago after a very unusual beginning.
Pico and Rio were found outside as babies, apparently abandoned after we believe something may have happened to their mother. A wildlife rehabilitator took them in, cared for them and successfully weaned them before they were eventually transferred to RIPR.
And these boys have grown into two of the smartest, funniest, freshest little troublemakers you could ask for. 😂
▪️They are spicy.
▪️They are curious.
▪️They are intelligent.
▪️They are fantastic flyers.
And they are very, very good at being parrots. 💚
Pico and Rio aren’t looking for a home that expects them to become cuddly companion birds. They aren’t the right match for someone whose dream is a parrot who readily steps up, rides around on a shoulder and wants to be handled throughout the day.
That simply isn’t who these boys are—and we don’t need them to be.
What we want for Pico and Rio is someone who will appreciate them exactly as they are.
We envision a home with a large flight cage or, even better, an indoor aviary where these brothers can spend their days together flying, climbing, foraging, destroying things they’re allowed to destroy, learning, playing, chattering and undoubtedly plotting their next bit of Quaker mischief. 😂
And for the right person, these two could be incredible little training partners.
They’re smart, food-motivated birds with active brains, which creates so many opportunities for positive-reinforcement training that doesn’t require handling—target training, stationing, recall, entering a carrier voluntarily, foraging games and so much more.
Their relationship with their caregiver can be built on choice and trust rather than physical contact.
Pico and Rio would be especially wonderful for an experienced parrot person who loves watching natural behavior and gets just as much joy from creating enrichment, setting up foraging opportunities and observing their birds thrive as they would from having a bird sitting on them.
And yes…
They are a package deal. 💚💚
These brothers have spent their lives together, and that’s exactly how we want them to stay.
They aren’t beginner birds. They’re opinionated little Quakers with big personalities, and their future caregiver should have parrot experience and understand body language, boundaries and positive-reinforcement training.

But for the right person, Pico and Rio are going to be an absolute blast.
Sometimes loving a parrot means teaching them to live comfortably in our world.
And sometimes loving them means giving them the space, enrichment and freedom to simply be birds.
That’s the home we’re looking for for Pico and Rio. 💚

In 2016, 117 parrots from Weston, Connecticut needed us. In 2023, 21 birds from Massachusetts needed us. In May 2025, another 16 birds in New Hampshire needed help. Then came the NH74 rescue in 2026.

We never know whether the next emergency will involve one bird, ten birds, or another overwhelming large-scale rescue. What we do know is that when that call comes, there is no time to begin figuring out how to pay for veterinary care, transportation, medications, quarantine, food, housing, and rehabilitation.
We need to be ready before the phone rings.
Our goal for this year’s campaign is $11,000, and this matching opportunity could move us a HUGE step closer.

Welda is a mollucan Cockatoo, approximately 26 years old, who came to us in June after her previous owner sadly passed away. She is now looking for a home where she can once again have the companionship and attention she loves.

One of the most important things to know about Welda is that she is a very social cockatoo who requires a lot of attention and interaction. She does much better when she is able to spend plenty of time outside of her cage, exploring, following you around, and simply being included in whatever you’re doing.

Welda is incredibly sweet and loves being near her people. If you’re cleaning, don’t be surprised to find her following along or sitting nearby watching everything you do. She also loves hanging out on the table while you work and is perfectly happy just being part of your day. ❤️

Like many cockatoos, Welda is looking for more than just any home —she needs a home where she can be an active part of the family and receive plenty of daily attention and supervised time out of her cage.

She enjoys sola balls and tiny shoes. Pistachios and macadamia nuts are some of her favorite treats. We have also noticed that she may prefer women.

Welda is an incredibly loving bird with so much companionship to offer. For the right person who understands the social and emotional needs of a cockatoo, she could make a wonderful companion.
