🦜 MEET TIKA: Red Bird, BIG Personality, and Absolutely NO Indoor Voice! 🎤🤣
Looking for a quiet, reserved little feathered companion? Well… keep scrolling, because Tika is NOT your guy! 😂
Meet Tika, our handsome, approximately 10-year-old Yellow-backed Chattering Lorikeet who has a personality as colorful as his feathers!
This little comedian LOVES making silly sounds, chatting up a storm, tossing things off tables, and generally redecorating his surroundings to his liking. Metal spoons? Musical instruments. Paper towels? Confetti. Toys? Best enjoyed after a dramatic demolition! 🎉
Tika is also quite the foodie! His favorites include nectar, cherries, papaya, and bananas. As a lorikeet, he requires a specialized nectar-based diet, so his future caregiver will need to be prepared for his unique nutritional needs.
And bath time? Forget the misting bottle! 🚿 Tika prefers his own personal birdie bathtub, thank you very much!
Tika may favor the gentlemen, and he’s looking for someone patient, understanding, and ready to appreciate all the quirks that make him so wonderfully unique. He does have a history of biting, so an experienced, confident caregiver who understands parrot behavior would be ideal.
❤️ Tika doesn’t need someone to change who he is. He needs someone who will love him for exactly who he is!

🦜🎓 Inspiring the Next Generation of Animal Care Professionals! 💚
What a wonderful week of learning, laughter, and all things FEATHERS! 🪶
On Tuesday and Thursday, we had the pleasure of welcoming students from the JWU Animal Science Program to Rhode Island Parrot Rescue!
Our visitors had the opportunity to meet our incredible flock, get acquainted with our dedicated team, and take a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to operate a parrot rescue.
And we didn’t stop at the cute faces and colorful feathers! 😉 We dove into the science and specialized care behind our mission, exploring everything from avian medicine and nutrition to behavior, enrichment, training, and the unique challenges that come with rehabilitating rescued parrots.
Rescue work is so much more than providing a safe place to land. It’s about understanding each bird as an individual, meeting their physical and emotional needs, and giving them the tools to thrive. ❤️
A huge THANK YOU to the students and educators at Johnson & Wales University for spending time with us, asking thoughtful questions, and showing such enthusiasm for the work we do!
We absolutely love opportunities to bridge the gap between classroom education and real-world animal welfare. We’re excited to continue building this relationship and look forward to more opportunities to learn, collaborate, and inspire one another in the future!

Don't let his size fool you! RJ is a Mini Macaw with a whole lot of personality, plenty to say, and so much love to give!

RJ arrived at Rhode Island Parrot Rescue on May 21, 2025, alongside several other birds following the passing of their previous caretaker. Sadly, the birds had been living in poor conditions. RJ was one of 18 birds in the home, and we're so grateful we were able to give him and the others a fresh start.

Despite everything he's been through, he is an absolute sweetheart! He loves head scratches, enjoys spending time with people, and is more than happy to hang out on your shoulder while you work. Whether you're getting things done or simply relaxing, RJ would love to keep you company!

And did we mention he has quite the mouth on him?

RJ loves to mutter to himself and isn't afraid to throw in a few naughty words here and there! He also says "Hello," "Hi," and "Come here!" With RJ around, you're bound to have some entertaining conversations!

He has already experienced so much change in his life, and now we're hoping his next chapter will be his best one yet. He deserves a home filled with love, attention, enrichment, and someone who will appreciate his sweet, silly, and occasionally foul-mouthed personality!

RJ may be a little macaw, but he has an enormous amount of love to offer. All he's missing is someone to share it with.

Born on January 13, 1999, Arlo is a 27-year-old African Grey with a personality that is sure to steal your heart!

Arlo came to us after his previous caretaker was no longer able to care for him due to age. Like many birds adjusting to a new environment, Arlo needed some time to feel safe and comfortable. For a while, he was hesitant to even leave his cage. But with patience, reassurance, and the chance to move at his own pace, Arlo slowly began coming out of his shell!

Now that he's discovered how wonderful life outside his cage can be, he absolutely LOVES coming out! You'll usually find him happily hanging out on top of his cage, enjoying his surroundings. But don't let his innocent face fool you! This sneaky little guy has a habit of quietly making his way down to the floor to go on his own little adventures! We always have to keep an eye on him because you never know when Arlo might decide it's time to explore! We're also slowly introducing him to tree stands, although he's not quite a fan of them just yet.

Arlo arrived at the rescue with his beloved bells, and they mean the world to him. They're not just any toys; they're familiar treasures that have been part of his life for years. And don't worry, wherever Arlo goes, his bells go too!

Arlo also has quite the collection of sounds! From saying "Hello" and his own name to whistling tunes, catcalling, barking, meowing, and even imitating delivery trucks, there's never a dull moment with this handsome boy!

What Arlo needs most is someone who understands that trust takes time. He may not show you his entire personality on day one, and that's okay! He deserves someone who will be patient, respect his boundaries, and celebrate all those little milestones as he settles into his next home.

Arlo has already shown us just how much he can blossom when given the time and opportunity. Now, we're hoping someone will give him the chance to continue that journey in a home of his very own.

💙 Four little birds, one very happy home! 💙
Rudy, Berry, Paloma, and Blueberry are off to their home with Eileen, and we have a feeling these four little troublemakers are about to bring a whole lot of laughter, love, and just the right amount of chaos into her life!
Eileen knows what it means to share a life with a feathered companion. After many happy years together, she tragically lost her beloved African Grey, Abby. Losing a bird who has been such a big part of your life leaves an enormous hole in your heart, and it took time for Eileen to feel ready to open her home to another feathered friend.
But when the time was right and she met these four boys, something clicked! Eileen was ready to welcome all the chatter, antics, and joyful mischief that Rudy, Berry, Paloma, and Blueberry had to offer.
There is no replacing a bird you've loved and lost, but sometime you'll find room for new bonds, new memories, and new reasons to smile. We are so happy these boys found someone ready to embrace every bit of their little personalities, and we suspect they won't waste any time making themselves at home!
Happy homecoming, Rudy, Berry, Paloma, and Blueberry! May your days be filled with love, adventure, and all the mischief your little hearts could desire. Eileen, we couldn't be happier that these four have found their way to you! 💙🐦

Geri and Katori are off to meet their new budgie friend, River! 💙

Our lovely budgies Geri and Katori are heading home with one of our wonderful volunteers, Tracey! These two girls have a special job ahead of them: making friends with River, Tracey's shy single budgie, and hopefully showing her that the world isn't quite so scary when you have a couple of feathered friends by your side. 🥰

One of the lovely things about budgies is how much they can learn from one another. At the rescue, our budgies live together in an aviary, giving them opportunities to socialize, observe their flockmates, explore, and build confidence. Watching a shy bird grow braver by seeing another bird try something new is one of the sweetest parts of caring for these little flock animals!

Tracey hopes Geri and Katori will help River feel more secure and encourage her to explore and enjoy the company of other budgies. Of course, friendships take time, and we'll be cheering them on as they get to know each other at their own pace. 💚

Happy homecoming, Geri and Katori! May your new flock be filled with happy chirping, shared adventures, and three little birds growing in confidence together!

🤍Guinevere is off with her new family🤍
After two and a half years at the rescue, our sweet Umbrella Cockatoo, Guinevere, is off to begin her next chapter! A favorite among our volunteers, Guinevere has a special way of stealing hearts, and we couldn't be happier to see her find the person and family who are the right fit for her.
Cockatoos are extraordinary companions, but they also come with big personalities, big voices, and big commitments. Finding the right home means finding someone who understands and embraces all that comes with sharing their life with one of these amazing birds. Sometimes, that takes time. And Guinevere's story is a beautiful reminder of why it's worth waiting for the right match ❤️
Her new life is already sounding pretty wonderful! Guinevere will be joining Joyanne and her family's homeschooling days, with opportunities to learn, socialize, and be part of the everyday hustle and bustle of family life. We can't wait to hear about all the new experiences, enrichment, and love that await her.
Happy homecoming, Guinevere! Two and a half years was a long wait, but we hope the years ahead are filled with everything you've been waiting for, too 🥰

Jacaranda has found his flock! 💚🦜

This playful little rainbow lorikeet has quite the story! After being found outside and spending some time in the care of a zoo, Jacaranda made his way to us in search of a home where he could enjoy the individualized attention and companionship he seems to crave. And if there's one thing we've learned about Jacaranda, it's that this clever boy has A LOT of personality to share!

Jacaranda is energetic, curious, incredibly intelligent, and always ready to turn playtime into an acrobatic performance. You'll often find him upside down, because why do things the ordinary way? 😂 He thrives on interaction and mental stimulation, and he needed someone who could channel all that enthusiasm into something fun and rewarding.

Enter Rachel! As one of our volunteers, Rachel had the opportunity to get to know Jacaranda and discover just how much the two could accomplish together. Through training, they built skills, strengthened their bond, and found a wonderful way to turn all that rainbow lorikeet energy into teamwork. What started as getting to know one another grew into a special friendship, and it's been such a joy to watch!

And Jacaranda's new adventure wouldn't be complete without Nicole, Rachel's wife, who jumped right in, too! Nicole took the time to learn about Jacaranda, build a relationship with him, and prepare alongside Rachel for all the unique care needs that come with sharing life with a rainbow lorikeet. Both have been so thoughtful and dedicated in making sure Jacaranda is ready for this next chapter.

Now this upside-down-loving, endlessly entertaining little bird is heading home with Rachel and Nicole, where his days will be filled with enrichment, training, companionship, and plenty of opportunities to put that brilliant little brain to work. We couldn't be happier to see him surrounded by people who appreciate everything that makes him so wonderfully Jacaranda.

MEET PEGGY!
Peggy would like to remind you that a different foot doesn’t mean a smaller personality. 💛
This sulfur-crested cockatoo is sweet, chatty, and very interested in your attention. She also knows how to keep herself busy—just look at her investigating that ball!
Peggy has a deformed left foot and has developed her own ways of perching, holding food, and getting things done. At Rhode Island Parrot Rescue, her enclosure is arranged to make moving around easier. Her next caregiver will need to keep that same thoughtful approach, with an accessible setup that supports her comfort and independence.
We’re looking for someone who wants to learn Peggy’s ways, enjoy her conversation, and make room for the care she needs. She has plenty of personality to bring to that partnership. 🤍

💚🦜 EXCUSE ME… HAVE YOU MET BUDDY?
Because Buddy would probably like a word with you. Or several. Possibly a song, too. 🎶
At approximately 41 years young, this handsome Yellow-naped Amazon has been around long enough to know what he likes, what he doesn’t, and exactly how he’d prefer things to be done.
And quite frankly, we respect that. 😂
Buddy joined Rhode Island Parrot Rescue in September 2025, and we’ve been getting to know this green gentleman ever since.
A few things you should know about Buddy:
🎤 He’s a talker! Buddy enjoys vocalizing and singing, so don’t expect a completely silent household.
🚿 He’s perfectly capable of handling his own bath time, thank you very much.
☀️ He enjoys soaking up some sunshine in a safe, supervised environment.
🪵 He believes chewing is a perfectly acceptable hobby. Your furniture may disagree. Appropriate bird toys and enrichment? Absolutely necessary!
🥜 Almonds and pistachios are among his favorite rewards.
Now, Buddy isn’t necessarily the guy who’s going to throw himself into your arms the moment you meet him. He can be a little cautious, and he’s not afraid to let you know when he’s unsure.
But here’s something pretty cool…
Our volunteers have been working with Buddy on target training, and he’s been learning that interacting with people can lead to some pretty wonderful things. Especially when pistachios are involved!
He’s making progress, and we’re enjoying watching his confidence develop. He also steps onto a stick!
So, who needs a Buddy?
Someone who appreciates a mature Amazon with a big personality, a beautiful singing voice, and a healthy respect for personal space.
Someone who understands that parrots aren’t decorations, and that a 41-year-old bird comes with a lifetime of habits, preferences, and experiences.
And preferably someone who doesn’t mind a little unsolicited commentary throughout the day. 😂
Buddy has already lived quite a life. We’d love to see what adventures are still ahead of him.
