The Community Pet Food Pantry at Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Animal Shelter is out of cat food! And low on dry dog food, too!

Did you know that financial hardship is one of the most common reasons people surrender pets to the shelter? You can help our friends and neighbors in the community keep their pets at home with their families instead of in the shelter, just by donating a bag of food, or some litter.

Donations can be dropped of at the loading dock on the left side of the shelter (1011 Lee Hwy. Verona)

Or, if you won't be headed up that way, feel free to help from the comfort of your couch, beach towel, lawn chair, or wherever else you might be this weekend, by shopping our wish lists.

With your help, we covered Ebon's dental earlier this year. He's healthy and ready to go home, but after almost 18 months in the care of Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Animal Shelter, he still hasn't found his people.

Ebon is shy and slow to come out of his shell, but once he does he wants your love and affection. He loves to play, especially with his squeaky toy birds, and enjoys being brushed. He's almost 3 years old, and is content to hang out with you while you read, watch tv, or go about your day. Ebon is quick to purr once he gets to know you, starting as soon as you start petting him.

Friends of SAWAS alumnus Paramore is looking for a forever home that's as special as she is.

Paramore has a neurological condition called feline hyperesthesia syndrome which is pretty complicated, and generally manifests as extreme sensitivity of the skin usually near the base of the tail. It can cause a variety of symptoms, but we're happy to report that Paramore's symptoms are well controlled by medicines (which she takes extremely well) and routine. This girl ✨thrives✨ on a predictable routine.

She loves to have a space all to herself. If we're being honest, what she'd really like is a home all to herself and a low key human or two. Paramore is currently in foster, and has a cage that is just hers. When she gets stressed, she'll even put herself away in it because she knows that's her spot. But, you will owe her a treat for that. She's been known to bother the other cats in her foster home, which stresses her out, which causes her to put herself away in her cage, where she demands a treat. We're starting to think it's a racket.

When she's not hustling for treats, she enjoys carrying sticks, or things that look like sticks (pens, pencils, magic wands) around in her mouth, or having a nap. If she's bored, she might chirp to get your attention, but then decide that she doesn't actually want it. What? A girl's got a right to change her mind!

Her foster mom sums it up best:
"She's petite, and cute as 💩, she's funny, but also very odd"

If you or someone you know is a fan of the oddballs, the misfits, the quirky kids who just don't fit in, Paramore might be the girl for you. She currently co-exists with other cats in her foster home, but she'd do best in a home where she can be the queen of the castle with no other pets jostling for the throne.

Friends of SAWAS alumnus Rachel is Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Animal Shelter's longest dog in care. If she is still in care on September 24th, it will mark 1 year that she's been without a family. We would love to see her ✨not✨ hit that anniversary.

Rachel came to the shelter after her owner passed away. She's been doing great in her foster home, where she gets along with other dogs, but she would LOVE to have a home of her own.

Rachel doesn't have eyes, but that doesn't bother her at all, since she was born without them. She gets around pretty well, and even plays, though she needs some additional human guidance from time to time. Rachel is about 6 years old, so while she has energy and playful moments, she's well out of the go go go puppy stage. Rachel is a sweet girl who likes affection and snacks.

This little dude is Otis, a 5 year old pug-chihuahua mix. He's having a pretty rough time lately, and he can't even cry about it because he has
Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS).

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is a mouthful, but it's just the clinical way of saying that Otis's tear glands aren't producing enough tears to properly lubricate his eyes. KCS isn't just irritating, if left untreated Otis could end up with painful corneal ulcers.

On top of his eye troubles, Otis's teeth are in bad shape, too, so our boy here is going to need a dental, with at least some of his teeth coming out.

Introducing Sausage. She and her BFF Kabob came to the shelter together when their owner could no longer afford to care for them.

Sausage is 8 years old, a total sweetheart, and tips the scales at a whopping 4.12 pounds. And, perhaps most importantly of all, she needs our help. The vet noted that Sausage has severe dental disease which needs to be addressed before she's healthy enough to be adopted.
