Meet Maverick, a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon!

Maverick is here to put in the work and continue developing into the bird dog he was bred to be. Griffons are known for their versatility, intelligence, and ability to handle tough conditions—and I’m excited to see what Maverick can accomplish.

Stay tuned for updates as we put the miles on him and continue building this foundation, and continue on next spring for his amazing owner!🐦‍⬛🎯

Riggs is looking like a whole new dog after getting cleaned up! ✂️🐾

This Golden Doodle is really ready to finish up the fetch process now. With that haircut out of the way, we can get back to putting the finishing touches on his retrieve and bringing everything together.

The haircut may seem like a small thing, but being comfortable, clean, and able to clearly see and move makes a difference when we’re asking a young dog to focus and learn.

A huge thank you to Zubu Pet Grooming by Lisa for doing such a wonderful job on Riggs! They got him looking sharp and ready to get back to work. 🙌

Riggs has come a long way, and we’re getting very close to putting the final pieces together. Now it’s time to finish the fetch! 🐦🦆

Working Dog Wednesday 🐾

Clifford is almost finished with the Fetch Process, and at just under 5 months and 1 week old, he’s showing exactly why we put so much emphasis on building the foundation the right way.

Today, I threw him a live, clipped-wing chukar and let him experience the excitement and pressure of a real bird. He stayed engaged, handled it well, and continued to show the confidence and desire we want to see developing at this age.

We aren’t trying to rush him. We’re taking what he already has and molding it into a finished working dog.

The foundation is being built now, and the fun is just getting started. 🔥🐦

Lainey — The Next Step

Lainey went home last week, and I’m happy to say she has adjusted very well to life back home with her family. Seeing her settle in, be comfortable, and continue putting her training to work is exactly what we want to see.

But training doesn’t end the day a dog leaves the kennel. Especially for a dog like this, because she has a personality, that with her unfortunate initial upbringing, needs to be constantly handled correctly and put on the right path.

I’ll be making an in-home visit with Lainey and her family to see her in her own environment. This gives me the opportunity to see exactly what situations they are dealing with at home, how Lainey responds to them, and—most importantly—how I can teach her family to make the right corrections at the right time.

A dog can understand everything we teach them, but the consistency of the people handling them is what ultimately makes that training last.

The goal isn’t just to send home a trained dog. It’s to send home a family that knows how to maintain that training.

Lainey came to us from the humane society with a lot of pulling and very little understanding of what was expected of her.

Now look at her.

Walking calmly at heel alongside a 6-year-old. Listening, focused, and completely connected to her handler.

This is what we mean by developing the dog in front of us. We aren’t trying to take away who Lainey is—we’re giving her the tools to succeed in the real world.

A dog that can listen to an adult is great. A dog that can confidently and respectfully walk beside a child is something special.

Working Dog Wednesday 🐾

Meet Rooster. 🐓

Just 6 months old and right where we want him to be.

Six months is a great age to send a young dog into a program like this. They’ve had time to develop, gain confidence, and start showing you who they are, while still being young enough that we can build the right habits and shape their natural abilities.

Rooster has already been gun conditioned, and now we’re moving into the Fetch Process.

The goal isn’t to take anything away from Rooster or turn him into something he isn’t. We’re molding what’s already there. The drive, the attitude, the natural ability — those are his. Our job is to give him the structure, understanding, and accountability to bring those qualities out consistently.

We’re building the foundation now so that when it’s time to put it all together in the field, Rooster knows exactly what his job is.

He’s got a lot ahead of him, and we’re excited to watch him develop.

Working Dog Wednesday 😇

Real obedience isn’t just about looking good on the training field—it’s about staying calm and making the right decisions in the real world.

One of my favorite things to do with obedience dogs is to go through a petco or fleet farm (usually after the 4 foundation weeks are done). We walked through the store, made our way to the checkout, and while I paid for everything, Lainey held a perfect sit right beside me without a second thought.

That’s the goal: a dog you can confidently take anywhere, knowing they’ll stay focused no matter what’s happening around them.

Every outing is another step toward building a reliable companion that listens because they understand the job—not just because they’re wearing a leash.

Ready for the real world. 💪🏼

Yesterday, Eva picked up Maveryn, and watching everything come together never gets old.

The biggest goal during a go-home session isn’t just showing off what the dog can do—it’s syncing the owner and dog together. Communication has to be clear, consistent, and fair. Once that happens, everything starts to click.

Today we put it all together. Maveryn walked beautifully at heel alongside Eva, we synced up his here command, remote sit, and the fundamentals they’ll use every single day. Watching the confidence grow on both ends of the leash is one of the most rewarding parts of this job.

Maveryn is leaving with more than obedience. He’s leaving with clarity, structure, and a new way to communicate with his owner that will last long after training is over.

Thank you, Eva, for trusting The Working Dog Co. with Maveryn. I can’t wait to watch everything you two accomplish together. He’s one of the luckiest dogs to have you as his bestfriend!

Working Dog Wednesday 💪🏼

Meet Teddy. 🧸

Teddy is currently working his way through the Fetch Process, and it’s been fun watching everything start to click. Fetch isn’t just about teaching a dog to pick something up—it’s about building a reliable, confident retriever that understands exactly what’s being asked of him.

Each session builds on the last. We focus on consistency, proper mechanics, and making sure Teddy understands his job from start to finish. When that foundation is built correctly, retrieving becomes second nature instead of something the dog has to think about.

The exciting part is we’re only getting started. Before long, Teddy will be delivering bumpers cleanly to hand, retrieving with confidence, and doing it with the consistency every retriever should have.

Progress like this doesn’t happen overnight, but with the right process, it happens.

⭐️ Star Student of the Day: Maveryn ⭐️

Today was a fun one—not only because Maveryn crushed another training session, but because I finally got to put the new Meta glasses to work. Being able to capture training from my point of view gives a whole new perspective on what clear communication with a dog actually looks like.

Today’s sequence was exactly what we want to see:
✔️ Here
✔️ Front sit
✔️ Side heel

Then I left Maveryn in a remote sit, walked away from him, and gave him another here command. He came straight in, hit another clean front sit, and finished perfectly into side heel.

Calm. Focused. Confident.

He’s getting ready to head home next week, but first there’s one more important test—a trip to Petco. Real-world training is where everything comes together. We’ll make sure he walks politely through a public store, ignores distractions, and remains responsive around people and other dogs. He couldn’t be more lucky to have a such an amazing owner, and this is going to be just what she needs to make life that much more enjoyable with her best friend. 🐾
