Winter sowing seedling size and germination success rate can vary wildly!

Here is a peak at one gardener’s range of seedlings:

Some seedlings, like woodmint and coreopsis are already ready to go in the ground. They have more than two sets of true leaves.
Goldenrod had high germination rates, but they are still on the smaller side.
Meanwhile Monarda, or Beebalm, have a few strong looking seedlings.
And columbine has a small showing of only three seedlings.

Meanwhile, previous year’s plants are thriving and blooming in a woodland shade garden providing food for the ecosystem.

Join our transplanting event on June 28! More details on our website!

We were fortunate to have a lovely team of volunteers from last Thursday to help us work on the Watertown-Cambridge Greenway!

As part of ‘s annual Watertown Helps Out month of giving back, volunteers removed invasive plants such as garlic mustard, Japanese knotweed, and black swallow-wort. They also laid a wood chip border around the demonstration pollinator garden. Thanks again to the for the wood chips and picking up the trash bags after the event.

We have volunteer events throughout the season! Be sure to check them out, watertowngardens.org/events

If you winter sowed seeds this season, remember to open them up or even move them into a shady area for this hot sunny weekend! There will always be a variation in germination success, and size of seedlings. They will be ready to transplant when they have two sets of true leaves! 🌱

Come learn how to design and plant a beautiful micro-forest in your yard! Sign up for a FREE COURSE offered on Saturday, May 23, 11:30 to 3:30 pm, at the Watertown Free Public Library.

As our summers get hotter, city-dwellers are increasingly experiencing the effects of living in urban "heat island" areas. Micro-forests are an innovative way to bring habitat-rich, cooling greenery to neighborhoods suffering these effects.

Sponsored by Trees for Watertown thanks to support from the Bosch Community Foundation, this workshop is an opportunity to learn from an expert, Luca of 1 Acre of Trees Nursery, how to assess site conditions, choose plants, and design for shade, habitat, and sustainability!

Take advantage of this special one-time opportunity! This free workshop is LIMITED TO 12 PARTICIPANTS, so sign up soon! Email [email protected] to register.

Thank you so much to our great volunteers on the Watertown-Cambridge Greenway this past Saturday!

We were fortunate to be joined by volunteers from .usa , Scout Troop 30, and the VFW. With these great crews we were able to remove a dozen large trash bags of garlic mustard, a common invasive plant in this region, as well as removing trash and cutting back knotweed, another invasive plant on the Greenway.

We couldn’t do this important work without you!
