Even dogs receiving year-round heartworm prevention should be tested annually. Medications can be missed, spit out, vomited, or not absorbed properly — and sometimes a dose simply gets forgotten.
Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes, and an infected dog may show few or no symptoms in the early stages. By the time coughing, exercise intolerance, fatigue, breathing problems, or other signs develop, significant damage may already have occurred.
