🐾 THE MORE YOU KNOW… WITH CHEESE! 🧀🐶

🩸 Why Does Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork Make a Difference?
Your pet may look perfectly healthy on the outside—but bloodwork can sometimes tell us a different story.
Before anesthesia, pre-anesthetic bloodwork gives our veterinary team important information about your pet’s health and helps us make informed decisions when planning their procedure.

❤️ What are we looking for?
🐾 Liver and kidney function — These organs play important roles in processing and eliminating anesthetic medications.
🐾 Red and white blood cells & platelets — A CBC can help identify concerns such as anemia, inflammation/infection, or platelet abnormalities.
🐾 Blood glucose, proteins & electrolytes — Abnormalities may affect how we approach anesthesia, fluids, medications, or recovery.
🐾 Problems that aren't obvious during an exam — Pets can appear completely normal while bloodwork reveals something that deserves attention before an elective procedure.

Most importantly, bloodwork helps your veterinarian develop an anesthetic plan tailored to the individual patient. If something unexpected is found, the doctor can determine whether the plan should be modified, additional testing is appropriate, or the procedure should be postponed.

🧀 Cheese says:
“We don’t guess before anesthesia. We test!” ❤️🐾

Pre-anesthetic bloodwork doesn't eliminate every anesthetic risk, but it gives your veterinary team valuable information to help make anesthesia as safe as reasonably possible.

At Steel Veterinary Services, your pet isn't just another procedure. They're our patient, and their safety matters to us. ❤️

🐾🎃 A Little Magic Outside the Clinic! ⚡🏰

At Steel Veterinary Services, we believe that a great team is built not only through hard work, dedication, and compassion, but also through laughter, friendship, and making wonderful memories together! ❤️

Recently, part of our Steel Veterinary Services family enjoyed a little getaway to Hershey, Pennsylvania! 🍫

Our adventure included a delicious breakfast at The Circular at The Hotel Hershey, followed by a magical day at Hersheypark, complete with Halloween decorations, Harry Potter-inspired outfits, plenty of laughs, and unforgettable memories! 🧙‍♂️✨

While not everyone could join us this time, we were grateful for the opportunity to spend some quality time together outside the clinic.

Behind every appointment, every surgery, and every patient we care for is a team of people who work hard and genuinely care about what they do.

We are thankful for our entire Steel Veterinary Services team and everything they bring to our clinic each day. 💚🐾

Because sometimes, the best way to celebrate teamwork is to put down the stethoscopes, pick up a little magic, and simply have fun together! 🥰

🧀🐾 The More You Know with Cheese 🐾🧀

Today’s Lesson: BRING THE P**P! 💩

Cheese would like to make an important public service announcement:

“Yes, we really do want your p**p. Please don’t make it weird.” 😂🐶'"

That little stool sample can tell your veterinary team a lot about what may be happening inside your pet.

Intestinal parasites aren't always obvious. A pet can look perfectly healthy and still be carrying parasites or shedding parasite eggs. Depending on the parasite, infection may cause diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, poor growth, anemia, or other problems—and sometimes there may be no obvious symptoms at all.

F***l testing can help detect intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and certain protozoal parasites such as Giardia, depending on the type of testing performed.

And this isn't only about your pet. ❤️

Some intestinal parasites are zoonotic, meaning they can potentially infect people. Children and people with weakened immune systems can be particularly vulnerable, which is another reason routine parasite prevention, testing, and promptly cleaning up pet waste are important.

💩 Cheese's Poop-Sample Tips

Bring a fresh sample whenever possible. A small amount is usually plenty—there is absolutely no need to bring us the entire backyard. 😂 Place it in a clean, sealed container or bag, and if you can't bring it in promptly, call us for instructions on how to store it until your visit.

So when our team says:
“Could you please bring a stool sample?”
We're not being weird.
We're doing medicine. 🩺😂

And Cheese would like it officially documented that although his name is Cheese, he is not responsible for collecting specimens.

🐾💕 A Little Throwback to Jolene’s Visit! 💕🐾

Sweet Jolene came to visit us on September 5th, and as you can see… she received absolutely no attention whatsoever. 😂❤️
Our team made sure she got plenty of love, cuddles, kisses, and snuggles during her visit. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it! 🥰🐶

One of our favorite parts of veterinary medicine is getting to know our patients and watching them grow. And judging by those paws, we have a feeling Miss Jolene has a LOT of growing left to do! 🐾😂

Thank you for coming to see us, beautiful girl! We loved having you at SteelVet and can’t wait to see how much bigger those paws—and the puppy attached to them—are at your next visit. ❤️

🖤🐾 CUTENESS ALERT! 🐾🖤

Everyone look who came to visit: Nellie! 🎀

This beautiful girl came to see us at 16 weeks old for her final set of puppy vaccines, and seriously… LOOK AT THAT FACE! 😍

The fluff. The little bow. Those paws. We just can’t handle it. 🥹❤️

Nellie is officially finishing up an important part of her puppy wellness care, and we loved getting to spend some time with this gorgeous girl.

Thank you to Nellie’s family for trusting Steel Veterinary Services with her care. We can't wait to watch this beautiful girl grow! 🐾

Give Nellie some love! ❤️🐶

🎉🎂 Happy Birthday, Alex! 🎂🎉

Today we’re wishing a very Happy Birthday to Alex, one of the familiar faces behind the scenes here at Steel Veterinary Services! 🐾❤️

Alex is always there when we need an extra set of hands, and especially during the summer when he’s off from school, you’ll often find him helping our team at the front desk and wherever else he’s needed.

Outside the clinic, Alex is a dedicated competitive swimmer and a hardworking student, balancing a busy schedule while still making time to help his family and our team.

We are incredibly proud of the young man he has become and excited to see where his future takes him. ❤️

Please help us wish Alex a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎉🎈🎂

We hope you have an amazing day, Alex! Thank you for always being there when we need you. ❤️🐾

🐾 THE MORE YOU KNOW… WITH CHEESE! 🧀🐶

Fleas & ticks are more than just an itchy nuisance!
These tiny parasites can cause some BIG problems for our pets. Fleas can cause intense itching, flea allergy dermatitis, and can transmit tapeworms. Ticks can transmit serious diseases such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and others.

And remember—indoor pets aren’t automatically protected! Fleas and ticks can hitch a ride inside on people and other animals, and once fleas establish themselves in your home, they can be difficult to eliminate.

That’s why we recommend year-round parasite prevention, including during the colder months. ❤️

At Steel Veterinary Services, some of the preventatives we recommend include Credelio Quattro and NexGard PLUS for dogs, and Bravecto for cats. Your veterinarian can help determine which product is appropriate for your individual pet.

🧀 Cheese’s advice: Don’t wait until you find a flea or tick to start thinking about prevention. Keeping parasites away is much easier than dealing with the problems they can cause!

Have questions about flea, tick, heartworm, or intestinal parasite prevention? Give us a call—we’re happy to help! 🐶🐱
