‼️The FDA has announced the issuance of warning letters to producers of the recalled HYCOAT product that killed 20 horses and sickened over 80 horses. The product was recalled in January 2026 for fungal contamination, and the FDA continued further investigations to understand the source of the issue.

Last week, AHC recognized Mrs. Darlene Alkire of West Virginia for receiving recognition for her work to secure official recognition of the horse as a national symbol of the United States. She has asked us to share a link to a Change.org petition she is circulating.

The TIME has come to modernize how competition horses move internationally.

The bipartisan Temporary International Movement of Equines (TIME) Act of 2026, introduced by Reps. Paul Tonko (D-NY) and Kat Cammack (R-FL), would create a more modern, science- and risk-based approach to the temporary U.S. entry of high-health competition and racehorses, while maintaining strong protections for equine health and biosecurity.

With the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles on the horizon and the U.S. continuing to host major international equestrian and racing events, now is the time to ensure our policies support safe, efficient international competition.
But introduction is only the beginning. We need the horse industry to help build momentum.

If you represent an equine organization: Add your organization as an official TIME Act supporter: https://forms.gle/YaWadApXXWwhDUzf9

And wherever you participate in the horse industry: Contact your Members of Congress and ask them to support the TIME Act: https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-member

📢USDA Corrects Press Release Issued Sept. 21 Regarding Companion Animal Welfare

On September 21, 2026, the USDA issued a press release regarding "Actions marking a new Era of Companion Animal Welfare".

Included in the release were references to horses and the Horse Protection Act. This caused alarm in the equine industry, as some felt this was signaling USDA plans to change horses from federally designated "livestock" classification to companion animals.

AHC made inquiries with USDA leadership, who acknowledged the confusion and stated "The Department is actively working on amending its public messaging related to this issue."

A new release was subsequently issued on September 23, 2026, removing those references, and a link can be found below.

USDA Leadership has confirmed there is no intention to reclassify horses as companion animals.

‼️NWS Update ‼️

‼️NWS Update ‼️

The USDA has confirmed a case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in a leg wound on a working ranch horse in Grant County, New Mexico. This is the second confirmed horse case in the United States as part of the current incursion.

US Equestrian continues to monitor the progression of NWS in the United States and reminds you that fly migration and NWS protocols could change in the coming weeks and months.

US Equestrian has protocols in place for licensed competition organizers and participants to reduce the opportunities for the fly to spread – both for those conducting events in infested states and those with horses shipping in from infested states or zones. Required steps may include checking horses for wounds when they arrive and continuing to monitor horses during the competition. Finding and reporting suspect cases early helps protect horses and competition grounds from screwworm threats, including infestation and resulting quarantines.
