Is it OK to leave a sponge in water?
Sticking your sponge in the dishwasher or boiling water to disinfect is a no-go, and leaving it to sit in soapy water at the bottom of your sink is also a bad idea. Yes, really. our line!

Can sponges live outside of water?
Although there are few exceptions to this rule, they are mainly saltwater creatures. That means that the overwhelming majority of the species would quickly die if you put them in fresh water. They are also very sensitive to air and they can't survive for long out of the water.

The Porifera are primarily filter feeders, utilizing food particles suspended in the water and captured by the choanocytes. Food particles consist essentially of bacteria, other microorganisms, and particles of organic debris; sponges also probably absorb dissolved organic substances.
