Golden Light Pet Loss Compassionate support before and after the loss of a beloved companion

Our pets are more than just faithful companions, sometimes they teach us something in those quiet moments.

What is something you have learned from your beloved pet?

One of the hardest parts of pet loss is how quiet the house suddenly feels.

Grief often shows up in the smallest moments:
the empty food bowl,
the missing footsteps,
reaching for them out of habit,
calling out their name.

Remember, your feelings are valid and you are not alone in your sorrow.

Helping children cope with loss can be incredibly challenging, especially when you’re grieving too. Children share similar needs as us adults.

Encourage them to express themselves and ask questions. Asking questions is their way of reaching out to talk about the loss. It might be tough to handle these questions, but it’s important not to avoid answering them.

Acknowledge and share emotions. Let your children see your feelings so they realize their emotions are normal as well. Experiencing sadness together and finding joyful moments amidst grief is essential for healing after losing your pet.

Grieve together actively. Creating ways to honor your pet with your child can be a beautiful journey. Planning memorials, crafting keepsakes, or starting new traditions are all heartfelt ways to celebrate the love you shared with your pet.

Of course, you know your child best! It’s also a good idea to keep other important adults (teachers, coaches, and friend’s parents) in the loop. This way, support can come from all sides.

Let’s talk about the heavy feeling of guilt that often accompanies the decision of euthanasia. Guilt can be one of the most intense emotions you might face after saying goodbye to your beloved pet. It’s natural to question yourself, wondering if you chose the right moment, if it was too soon or too late, or if your pet felt abandoned.

Please know that these feelings are completely normal and understandable after losing a beloved companion. Animals live in the present, and their final moments are spent peacefully drifting off to sleep, surrounded by love and the people they adore.

I want to reassure you that you made the most compassionate decision possible with the information and love you had for your pet at that time. Be gentle with yourself.

The name Golden Light originated from the beauty of the setting sun casting its glow on Hendrix's picture, serving as a reminder that his love remains all around us in these small, precious moments.
