We see this often:

A cat is urinating outside of the litterbox and it is assumed that they are acting out. However, cats usually have a reason.

Sometimes the reasoning is medical:
-Urinary Tract Infection/ Inflammation
-Bladder stones
-Arthritis or pain from entering and exiting the litterbox
-Hormonal response

Other times, the reasoning is behavioral:
-Territory marking
-Stress/ anxiety (Even the smallest changes can cause stress in cats)

This little guy, for example, was a young male kitten who needed to be neutered. Easy fix!
