Need to share this to make others aware and keep people and other dogs safe!

This is Athena she is NOT a service dog or a service dog in training. She is to old, over weight with joint issues, has same s*x aggression, resource guarding, and a bite history. She is being handled by her owner Dawn Robin O'Donnell. Dawn knows what she is doing is illegal and apparently just doesn't care. I know this because I met Dawn and Athena back in the fall of 2024 when Dawn hired me to temperament test Athena and work with her on her severe anxiety and issues with being handled for the vet and groomer. I made it very clear that Athena would NEVER meet the legal definition of a service animal however Dawn did get a note for her to be an emotional support animal. Emotional support animals are not allowed in public places under both maine law or federal Americans with disabilities act of 1990. If you see them out in a bout be very wary of Athena. If you are an employee PLEASE ask her the 2 legal questions 1) is this a service animal required because of a disability? 2)what work or tasks has the animal been trained to perform?

If the in training patch is on you can kick her out no matter her answers because in maine you MUST be a specialized service dog trainer to bring an in training dog into public! If Athena is barking, growls, lunging, pulling, or acting up in any way please ask her to leave! You will be protect other real service dogs and the general public!

Dawn frequently goes to Bucksport, Ellsworth, and Brewer for shopping.

Let's talk about something controversial. This is Lilo, she is not yet fixed as we are waiting for maturity to spay for health reasons. This means she still has heat cycles until her spay appointment. When you are considering a service dog this is one of the things not talked about a lot, male or female? I always personally choose females because I just bond with them better. However that comes at a cost which is how to deal with heat cycles? I have a few options I can
1) Leave her home and use other coping mechanisms or use a back up service dog (namely ulfr)
2) I can limit where I work her based on how she is handling her heat or chances of running into intact males.
3) I can continue to work her wearing a diaper and take extra precautions to keep her clean and sanitary.

It's a lot to consider. My choice will change based on where she is in her heat, who may be around, and how she is feeling through her heat. Is she comfortable? Listening? Capable? For Lilo the answer to all of those today was yes, So Lilo went with us for a quick lunch date and to stop at the bank. Many handlers will opt to leave their in season dog at home and that is valid and okay! A service dog is a tool that can be so beneficial but it shouldn't be your only tool in your tool box to manage your disability. Legally there is no requirement to spay or neuter your service dog and many times people will assume an intact dog is fake. That couldn't be farther from the truth. Just like everything in life this topic is nuanced. If you have questions or want to share your opinion please drop it in the comments. Here is to Lilo my hard work girl!
