It’s official!

Got my first judges card through the American Stock Horse Association. Very excited to see what the future holds!

While I probably won’t judge many shows, I’m excited for the opportunity to continue to develop my eye in helping coach my students and train my horses. Never thought that I’d be getting my first judges card at 27. While it truthfully doesn’t matter, I did feel good to be the youngest in the room and pushing myself to take the leap anyway.

Thank you to all of those that have helped me get this far!

Liesel’s first time learning to ride one handed on RedBugs earlier this week.

Liesel will soon be graduating Baylor in June getting her PhD in Educational Psychology and already has her Masters in Curriculum & Instruction.

Liesel will finish up lessons with us in June to move back home, and while we are sad to see her go, we are super excited to see what the future holds for her. She has been an awesome student and we know her future in the educational field is bright and she will do an awesome job for all of her students! She has already accepted a job in her field and we know she will do great things.

Mrs. Dawn back on her horse, Leoti.

Leoti has been a tough nut to crack, but we're moving in the right direction!

This is a complete 180 from the past where Leoti would'v been chomping at the bit to go and run, but now she's settling. Leoti is a horse that I would say had some decent training along the way but it didn't prepare her for the intended goal when it comes to under saddle. She probably would've been fine in any kind of speed event.

On the ground, it seems like they only used one method and they took it too far - if anything goes wrong, she thought she had to RUNNNN RUNNN RUNNN! While it is good to correct horses by moving their feet, overdoing anything has unintended consequences. Leoti would get pushy, crowd, rear, run at mach 7 while you only asked for a walk, and get vindictive (although thankfully there was not follow through on vindictiveness).

So, we've been doing the opposite and slowing everything down. Setting up ground drills that make it hard to go fast and easy to go slow (figure 8s around cones as one example), acting like mistakes are no big deal while still correcting, and showing her that sitting still is an acceptable answer (ground tying). Under saddle, we've done lots of circles, flex to stops (to stay out of mouth while her cues are being built), and putting steady rides on her where she just has to walk or trot at the same speed. It's nothing fancy, no tricks, just building confidence and patiently showing her the right answer.

We aren't done with her yet, but we are glad to see the progess and excited to keep moving her forward to be a well mannered trail horse. Also big Kudos to Mrs. Dawn, Leoti has been in our "Performance Package" where Leoti is worked by me 2x per week and Dawn has been taking 2 lessons per week to learn how to help Leoti. Dawn always comes with a great attitude and is willing to learn whatever she needs to for Leoti!

Meet “Wild Agenda”. Agenda is the biggest horse I’ve taken in years (16.2 or 16.3). He is a 5 yo Hanovarian/Morgan cross Warm blood that is in to get more forward, improve his manners, and do a little desensitizing like in the video below. He just came in last week and we are excited to see where he goes!

Late posting, and I didn’t get as much content this go around but we had a fun time at the Limestone County Mothers Day Show!

Chloe, video’d below won Novice all around again and her mom took 1st in Novice cow!

Amelia improved on her scores with her horse “ShineyWithAFreckle” and Cassidy took her grandmas horse this go around instead of her regular horse, Belle, who is off to be bred. Cassidy and Cowboy got to do their first clinic together - thanks to Jamie Lambert for being an awesome clinician and helping them work through forming a new partnership!

NightRider had his first show since his Mustang makeover and I schooled him in 3 classes, just letting him get exposure and figure out show life. He did his best in pleasure where I only had to correct him once. PeppyBelle had been back at her home for about a month working at her ranch but we picked her up and she tagged along too for her second time out at a horse show and got some good exposure as well!

Dottie & RedBugs

Dottie is one of my newer students and has been learning the ropes of all facets of horsemanship under saddle and on the ground. She is currently working her way through Level 1 of our lesson program.

In this video, you can see her finishing up grooming and continuing her education on how to lunge. Dottie comes to her lessons with a great attitude and willingness to learn. Be like Dottie!

NightRider

NightRider is a 4 yo Mustang that the Liberts family picked up from a Mustang Makeover. They've been bringing him in lessons for a couple of months now and just put him in training with me at the beginning of April to continue improving on his good start.

This little horse has a forgiving personality, is willing to learn, and we are super excited to see where we go with this horse!

Amelia and her horse, "Butterbean", (ShineyWIthAFreckle) working on Flyings.

Amelia got Butterbean 2-3 years ago and has dealt with a lot of health issues with this horse along the way, and has been continually through trial and error getting this horse better. Butterbean came in for a short tune up last month (15 days) and with Butterbean continuing to improve on her health, I was able to start bringing back her flyings. Amelia hasn't gotten to do a lot of flyings over her riding career, so very happy that her and Bean were able to take this next step in their riding journey! I didn't get all of her flyings video'd, but they have worked on this in a couple of lessons since Bean finished training and they've done a lot of reps (probably 25+ in lessons, maybe 35+) getting both clean changes and working through hiccups. Very proud of how hard they've worked not only getting Bean's health in order, but building the confidence in both of them ! They are putting in the sweat equity and it's paying off.
