Taffy HoneyBuns 🍯

The Embark Dog DNA Test dog age test has been on our wishlist for months. So I personally bought it during Prime Days🥲

We have zero clue how old Taffy is. Does it matter? No it doesn’t. BUT I would love to have a better idea than my guess of 2 to 6 years.

Medical update:
She’s is almost two weeks off steroids and this foster mom is holding her breath to see what her skin does. 🫣

So far she’s looking really good. She isn’t itchy. There’s no sores. Her toes aren’t swollen. Skin folds are quiet. We are still doing all of the normal frenchie care. Wipes and baths. She’s still on her Royal Canin USA rabbit food. The goal is to make sure we have her skin condition solved before putting her up for adoption. (She will be adopted through our local shelter)

My biggest fear is that she will be adopted and her skin will flare and it will be back to square one if her new home is not dedicated to making sure they are on top of it. 😐

We have been through so much trial and error. She has been with me since February and she truly isn’t the same dog anymore. It’s been beautiful watching her blossom into this incredible dog. 🐶

This is a fundraiser we have been wanting to do for a while and it’s a bit labor intensive, so I hope you all love it just as much as we do 🙏🏽❤️

Let’s talk Cats 🐱 and Clefts 👄

Cats are no different than dogs and should absolutely be checked for a cleft at birth. Clefts do not affect a particular breed so this means any and all cats can be cleft affected🙀

It’s a common misconception that a cleft is something we can see on their face. 💭
For a cleft lip, yes that’s true BUT cleft palates CANNOT be seen on a quick look at the face, you MUST open their mouth!

A cat can have a very normal and happy healthy life being cleft affected. 🩷The hardest work is when they are newborns where they need to be tube fed around the clock 😴
Eventually they are weaned to kibble and learn to drink from a water fountain or a rabbit bottle and some can even drink normally 🫶🏻

So they must need surgery right? 😵‍💫

Nope! 🙂‍↔️

Not all clefts need to be repaired.
But if they do need surgery, it’s extremely important to make sure a CT scan is done prior.
Many clefts can be much larger than what we see 👀

Please share our posts and let’s bring more awareness for the cat community 🐾 think of how many lives can be saved if we educate everyone we know?

Picture is of our forever foster Kuromi. Her cleft affects mostly her soft palate which has made it so she can eat soft foods which we never recommend 😂 but here we are.

Sabrina’s cleft affects her soft palate and quite a bit of her hard palate with a small opening at the very front (rostral) of her mouth.

Welcome Wren 🪶 Marie to the rescue 🐶

I am going to start this post by immediately saying that Wren’s hydro seems severe. She is visually impaired. Her gait is wobbly. Her hind end gives out.

I want to make this clear because I can show you snippets of cute photos and videos and all of you can think what a sweet adorable frenchie she is. But that’s not fair to not be truthful.

Hydro affects animals in all different ways. Some cases live weeks some years. We never know. Wren is 13 weeks old according to the shelters paperwork. She was surrendered by her breeder so I would think that’s accurate. BUT she is pretty big at 10 pounds and having hydro. Either way, she has never been treated for her hydro and we have no idea how she will respond.
I have called the neuro team and are waiting for the scheduler to call. Will we do an MRI? Perhaps. We like to if they are stable. It helps us better understand what their brain is experiencing and it can help us change our medication protocols🙏🏼

I am having to go VERY slow with her. She’s already tried to bite me. She is scared. She has no idea where she is. Her whole life has been flipped outside down.

A huge thank you to Bradshaw Animal Shelter for giving her a chance to go to rescue ❤️ We appreciate our partnership with them!

I will post updates as much as I can. And Taffy will be happy when Wren hopefully feels better and can play!

7️⃣ months with Taffy HoneyBuns 🍯 🩷

She has been the most incredible dog.
From being shut down and trembling in a crate to hanging out at a farmers market 🥹

Her skin is a battle, and we are having a good week. I’m hoping we have a plan soon so she can be adopted and have all of her medical problems behind her. 🙏🏼

But for now, I am absorbing all the Taffy time. Because she is the sweetest little girl.

Taffy is being fostered through our local animal shelter. If you have ever considered fostering….do it!

Rescue updates 🐾

August and September have been whirlwinds 🌪️
We share a lot in our stories, but I know those get missed. So here’s what’s been going on.

On the East Coast with Kyle | 📍 Massachusetts 🧡 Becker is fully weaned (he’s a cleft bully), Abbott and Costello (the normal kittens who were going to be euthanized simply bc they couldn’t latch on a bottle 🤦🏻‍♀️) are doing great and will be looking for their new home soon! Parker (the hydro JRT) has an upcoming referral to Tufts neurology where we will be scheduling her MRi💪🏼 she personally welcomed her own special Neuro kiddo into her life, the cutest Corgi named Duncan. She also very tragically had Bea and Walker pass away. 💔 but they had the best care of all with Kyle and we are so grateful that she puts her heart on the line every time for these babies!

On the West Coast we had Noodle (who is now Poppy) adopted into an awesome family where she is having the time of her life! She’s now a professional dog trainer😅 We lost little King Tigger 😪 but having him come into our lives has opened the door to so many other rescues reaching out to me about cleft kitties. It thrills me to see so many getting help! Cats are just as important to advocate for as dogs 🙏🏼 Taffy (who is not backed by our rescue but is my foster for the local shelter) has been on Temaril-P for almost two weeks now. We are seeing her face clear and the swelling of her paw go down. Her belly is clearing as well. This is a tapered dose and short term. Our goal is that when she is done with this medication, then this will be long enough into her food trial to see if that’s what is going on 🫠 I’ve also been coaching a person here locally who is helping a tiny little cleft puppy. She is interested in starting her own rescue and I say the more the merrier!🙌🏼 there are not enough of us out there to help!

That’s a wrap for now! 💫 let’s see what the rest of this month brings us 🐾
