Our first time momma French Lop, Sybil, missed on the first breeding this summer, which wasn't a surprise because it got HOT. Fast forward to a month ago when she was successfully bred by our new buck who isn't even a year old. (Hooray!)
Momma was getting BIG and ended up delivering babies two days past, which is not abnormal. The inexperienced doe delivered 8 kits but 5 did not survive the first 20 minutes (we suspect this new mom may have been sitting on them) but the last three (the tiniest of the bunch) we're alive and doing ok so we helped Mom get a good nest set up with some fur we keep around for these situations. Sybil got a bit carried away cleaning one baby and ended up biting bits of its ears, so that little runt will be a special little pet if it makes it through.
Moral of the story. Sometimes rabbit breeding is rough. Emotional ups and downs. In the end, it's an incredibly rewarding hobby for our whole family. Raising livestock for show, pets, or food is not for the feint of heart! β€οΈβ€οΈ
Fingers and toes crossed that Mom can get to producing plenty of milk for this tiny litter and into the swing of being a great mom! Parenting can be tough, no matter the species!
