Someone once said to me, "You love animals so much because you have so much love to give, but you've never had enough safe spaces to pour it into."

I've never forgotten those words, because they described something I never knew how to say out loud.

Some of us love big. We give our whole hearts, and we learn the hard way that not everyone knows how to hold them. People took our softness and called it weakness. They took our loyalty and treated it like something we owed them. After enough of that, we stopped handing our love out freely and started holding it close.

But all that love doesn't just disappear. It waits.

And then a dog rests its head on your lap after a rough day. A cat curls up beside you without being asked. They don't keep score. They don't twist your words or make you earn your place. They just feel safe, every single time.

That's why their presence heals something people couldn't. With them, you never have to wonder if your love will be used against you.

So if you're the one who loves animals more than most people, don't let anyone make you feel strange for it. You're not broken or too sensitive. You're someone with a huge heart who learned to be careful. And you finally found somewhere your love is safe.

And sometimes, of everyone you've ever loved, the one who matched your soul the deepest was your dog.

Not because they said the right things or understood your career or gave great advice. They couldn't do any of that. They just knew when to sit close, when to lean their whole body against yours without needing an explanation, when your energy shifted before you even said a word.

They loved you without conditions, without keeping score, without ever once making you feel like you had to earn it. No bad mood scared them off. No hard season made them love you less. They just stayed, fully, every single day, asking for nothing but your presence in return.

People come with complications. Dogs come with certainty. And sometimes certainty is the deepest form of love there is.

If you've loved a dog like that, you already know. Nobody else has ever loved you quite that simply, or quite that completely. (Read that again.)
