Happy National skunk day. Oh Flower we miss you so much. You were such a sweet girl and loved by many.

National Skunk Day is celebrated annually on June 14th. In 2026, it falls on a Sunday. The day highlights the often misunderstood creatures, emphasizing their vital role in the ecosystem as highly effective pest control for lawns and gardens.

Come join me today at Perrot State Park. Learn what we do in our wildlife center at the Coulee Region Humane Society. Unfortunately they have listed to meet Flower but as you know she unexpectedly passed away in December. I have decided to retire Tater. (Story on him to come) However I will be introducing Waffles the new opossum. Learn how she came to us, Amelia the Flying squirrel, and Mojo the Everglade Rat Snake will also make their appearance.
It will be at the Interpretive (nature) center at 4:00 this afternoon. Help support our mission to help our native wildlife in need.

This female Painted turtle came into us after someone fishing caught her on their line. They cut the line and brought her into us. It was later in the evening so we were unable to get her into the vet until the next day to see if we could remove the hook. Once we took the x-ray the vet and I looked at each other in amazement that it had already traveled way down the intestines into the lower stomach area. Since the curved part of hook was heading first there wasn’t much to do but wait it out in hopes that – well – you know, p**p it out. After a few days of eating, yay, never so excited to sift through p**p. Well, I didn’t actually, one of my staff did. With no issues or concerns she was able to be taken back where she came from and returned to her home. We always return any turtle to the original area as they will spend their entire life trying to find their way back home.
Let's learn about the Painted Turtle:

The Painted Turtle is North America's most widespread native turtle.
Painted turtles must swallow their food underwater. Did you know their tongues cannot move freely; therefore they must rely on the water to help them ingest their meals.
The Northern populations of painted turtles can survive temperatures as low as -10° C (about 14° F). They do this by producing a biological substance like antifreeze that helps prevent their vital tissues from freezing. And burrowing under logs or roots in the mud.
Like many reptiles, their eggs have temperature-dependent s*x determination. Warmer incubation temperatures produce female hatchlings, while cooler temperatures result in males.
Because they are cold-blooded or ectothermic, they need to bask in the sun to regulate their body temperature. You will often see them piling on top of each other on logs, this can also helps rid them of shell parasites.
Their average lifespan is around 30 to 40 years, but some documented painted turtles have lived over 50 years in the wild!
Did you know that a group of turtles is called a "bale"? They thought that a group of turtles on top of each other looked like a bale of hay or cotton.
This was on lucky turtle and has now been released back to where it was found.
We have been overrun with wildlife this spring so if you can find it in your heart to donate we would greatly appreciate any amount or any items from our wish list. Last month alone we took in over 250 wild animals.

On Wednesday afternoon a very caring person stopped to help this little owl they saw along the road. Not sure how close the nest tree may have been from where found, but they did the right thing by driving it over 45 minutes to get it to us. They did try cleaning it off as they saw bugs on it. After intake we did clean a lot of fly eggs off feathers and the poor baby Barred owl was cold and thin. We set it up in our big incubator after the bath. Let it rest and warm up before small feedings.
By the next morning it was already more alert and wanting breakfast. It takes food like a champ and will have a great chance now to grow and be released when ready. Thank you to the couple who stopped to help. You can see by its eyes on intake that it would not have made it if they did not help. ❤️

So, a couple of days ago one of our past volunteers saw a Facebook post about a mom opossum hit by a car and in the middle of the road with babies climbing on her. She was so worried about them and tried reaching out to find out where they were. When she got there it looked like somebody moved mom to the side but did nothing more than that. Unfortunately babies were running in the road and succumb to the same fate as mom. The good news is Jeni got there in time to save 4 of them. She brought them to us and was so happy we felt they would do well. They are in great condition and now eating very well and seem very happy. Well, as happy as an Opossum can be I guess.
Please take the time to see if babies are around mom if you find yourself in this situation. We may not always be able to go out for the rescue; however, we have great past and present volunteers who are willing to step in and help.
Here is poor mama and her babies as Jeni found them. Then a couple days later looking sassy as they should.
