Meet Prudence (“Prue”), the cherished companion of one of our credentialed veterinary technicians. When Prue’s mom noticed she was uncomfortable and struggling to get settled, she brought her in for evaluation right away.

Advanced CT imaging identified a spinal issue at the L3-L4 region, allowing our team to move quickly toward treatment. Thanks to the expertise and prompt care provided by Dr. Newton and our surgical team, Prue is now recovering comfortably and doing well.

Stories like Prue’s are a reminder of the importance of advanced diagnostics, early intervention, and specialized veterinary care when pets show signs of pain or mobility changes.

🩺🐾 A torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) is the most common causes of hind leg lameness and knee pain in dogs. Similar to the ACL in humans, the CCL helps stabilize the knee joint. When this ligament becomes torn or damaged, the knee becomes unstable, leading to pain, limping, difficulty standing, and the development of arthritis over time.

At South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists, we offer advanced TPLO surgery (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) to help restore comfort, mobility, and quality of life for dogs with CCL injuries. During a TPLO procedure, the angle of the tibia is carefully adjusted to stabilize the knee joint and reduce abnormal movement. 🦴A specialized metal plate is then placed to support healing and long-term function.

Recovery after TPLO surgery includes pain management, restricted activity, and post-operative rehabilitation to help your dog heal safely and return to normal activity as quickly as possible.

Healing takes oxygen — and South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists is proud to offer advanced Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for veterinary patients.
HBOT is a safe, non-invasive treatment that helps support healing by delivering high concentrations of oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure. During treatment, pets relax comfortably in a hyperbaric chamber for approximately one hour — and many patients nap peacefully throughout the session.
The increased pressure allows oxygen to dissolve more effectively into the blood plasma, helping deliver oxygen deeper into damaged tissues where healing is needed most.
HBOT may benefit pets recovering from:

Orthopedic injuries
Sports medicine injuries
Wounds and burns
Tissue trauma with compromised blood flow

At South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists, veterinary medicine is more than a profession — it’s a legacy built on compassion, dedication, and love for animals. 🐾💙

This summer, we’re incredibly proud to welcome Maddy to the South Paws team as she gains hands-on experience while preparing for veterinary school. Maddy is the daughter of the late Dr. Bob and Jenn, and although Dr. Bob is greatly missed, the love for veterinary medicine he shared is clearly reflected in Maddy’s passion for the field.

Watching Maddy begin her own journey in veterinary medicine is a beautiful reminder that a legacy of care, kindness, and service can continue to inspire the next generation. We know Dr. Bob would be immensely proud to see her following in his footsteps, and our team is honored to be part of that journey. We are also deeply grateful for Jenn’s leadership, strength, and unwavering commitment to both our patients and our team each and every day.

And pictured alongside them is today’s sweet patient, Clyde! This handsome pup came in for a broken toe, but thankfully surgery will not be needed. After evaluation by Dr. Newton and our surgical team, Clyde will be treated conservatively with a splint and bandage to keep him comfortable and support healing.

Please join us in wishing Clyde a smooth recovery and celebrating the legacy of veterinary care that continues through Jenn and Maddy. 🩺✨
