My darlings, my loves, my flock!
As of yesterday New York became to most recent state to legalize Medical Aid in Dying. I took additional trainings and research in order to be prepared for this day. I would be honored to assist you or your loved one through this process without judgement.
Let me explain a few things about MAiD as with it's passing there is a lot of controversy and misinformation around it.
In the United States there are 4 rules that MUST be followed for MAiD. States may add additional requirements but these are required as bare minimum guard rails.
1. The person requesting must have an incurable condition that will result in death in 6 months or less. This is the requirement that divides MAiD from Su***de. Su***de is choosing to die when you have the option to live, MAiD is choosing to die on your own terms when life is no longer an option.
2. The requester must be over 18.
3. They must be of sound mind when discussing MAiD with their doctor AND when they administer their own medication. This is intended to prevent families from taking advantage of an elder's mental decline, or a caregiver overwhelmed by severe medical needs from talking someone with cognitive disabilities into it, and provide additional assurances this is what the requestor wants. Basically if they wouldn't be found able to sign a contract for themselves they can't be approved for MAiD.
4. Ultimately the drugs MUST be self administered. You can't have a nurse or a friend or family member (or me) help you consume them. It has to be your choice, at your time of choosing. Someone can mix the medication into the juice (generally apple juice is used) and hand you the cup or syringe for feeding tube, but you would need to drink or push under your own power.
My flock please feel free to ask any questions you may have, either here or privately. This is a huge development and I'd love to make sure you have accurate information. It is not my job, goal, or intention to push anyone to or away from MAiD. How you want to die is Deeply Deeply personal and is a choice that should be considered based on accurate information, not fear.
