My mom grew up in poverty, in a big family, with very little. She started patching up my quilt ‘Quilly’ when I was little. Scraps from all of our clothes. Sometimes she embroidered it. I dragged that quilt off to college and she’s safely stored here at the house. This was one of her favorite Dolly Parton songs and she would sing it to me. Dolly was a National Treasure, and accepted everyone as God’s child.

She was one of the first to be there for the gay community during the AIDS epidemic. She was a hero to my community in a way that is hard to explain. She welcomed us all. Healthy. Sick. Gay. Straight. Black. White. Brown. Christian. Catholic. Muslim. Every single one of God’s amazing creations, even when others taught hate. She taught love. She will forever be my hero.

🇺🇸 Did you know that Dolly Parton (January 19, 1946 – August 25, 2026) was an advocate and major financial supporter in the fight against HIV/AIDS, offering critical backing to the gay community at a time when the disease was highly stigmatised?

While country music culture historically remained silent during the peak of the AIDS epidemic, Dolly used her platform to raise funds, challenge stigma, and promote compassion.

Dolly’s AIDS advocacy included contributing her song "You Gotta Be My Baby," to the 1994 charity album Red Hot + Country, which raised funds for HIV/AIDS awareness and research.

In 1994, Dolly joined 35 other country music stars in the "Break the Silence" AIDS Awareness campaign. This initiative broadcasted public service announcements advocating for s*x education and safer practices.

Dolly’s production company, Sandollar Productions, co-produced the 1989 Academy Award-winning documentary Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt. The film chronicled the lives of those memorialised on the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt.

Through the Dollywood Foundation and personal donations, Dolly consistently directed financial resources to HIV/AIDS-related charities and healthcare facilities.

Dolly we will always love you 💔

FAIR TRADE FINDS AT CHICKADEE!
Gorgeous handmade Bolga Baskets just arrived!!!
Communities in northern Ghana have traditionally relied on farming and herding for their livelihoods. However, an increasingly unpredictable climate has made agriculture more challenging. To supplement household income, many artisans—primarily women—hand weave baskets from locally sourced grass.

African Market Baskets™ (AMB™), led by founder and CEO Steve Karowe, has been importing handcrafted goods from Africa for over 40 years. For the past 23 years, Steve has worked directly with artisans in Bolgatanga, supporting more than 5,000 weavers and their families.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of this work is witnessing the meaningful impact on artisans and their communities,” Steve shares.

Steve travels regularly to Africa to meet with weaving groups, listen to their needs, and ensure products meet high standards of quality and design. He also oversees the nonprofit Weaving Hope Together™, which supports vital initiatives such as access to healthcare, education, and clean water.

Committed to Fair Trade principles, AMB™ ensures that artisans receive fair wages and work in positive conditions. Over decades of collaboration, these partnerships have grown into lasting, trusted relationships.
