The Story of Bear

On June 26, Annette reached out to Redneck Rescue Animal Recovery Services to ask if we assist with dogs whose owners are unknown. We do.

We soon learned that Bear had jumped from a vehicle near the Loveland Sports Complex, just south of Highway 34. After escaping, he successfully crossed the busy highway and settled into the Lakes at Centerra neighborhood. Over the following days, sightings placed him throughout the neighborhood—from north to south and east to west.

We connected with Vicki, and together we immediately developed a recovery plan. Two trail cameras were deployed to establish Bear’s travel pattern and determine the best location to safely place a trap. Vicki was instrumental in posting updates on the Lakes at Centerra community page, asking residents to report sightings directly to us and, most importantly, not to follow, call, or chase Bear.

The community response was incredible. Within 24 hours, we had received enough sightings to establish a consistent travel pattern, allowing us to strategically deploy a trap.

After the trap was set, Bear was not seen at the trap site for two days. When he finally returned, he showed very little interest in the food inside the trap. That told us he was still being fed elsewhere, making it much less likely that he would enter the trap.

Recognizing this, Vicki made another post asking neighbors to temporarily remove any food they were leaving out and allow the trap to be Bear’s only food source. We understand that feeding a lost dog comes from a place of compassion, but during an active recovery, it can unintentionally delay a safe capture. A hungry dog is far more likely to enter a trap than one whose needs are already being met.

Once the neighborhood rallied behind that request and everyone followed the same recovery plan, everything changed. Bear returned to the trap, entered it safely, and was successfully secured without incident.

Bear was then transported home to Greeley, where he was reunited with his very relieved and overjoyed dad.

Bear’s story is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when an entire community works together. From the residents who reported sightings, to those who removed food and trusted the recovery plan, every person played a role in bringing Bear safely home. We are incredibly grateful to Annette, Vicki, and the entire Lakes at Centerra community for helping make this happy reunion possible.

We apologize for the delayed update—this one is long overdue!

On May 17, Shayna reached out to Redneck Rescue Animal Recovery Services after noticing a small dog visiting her back porch late at night. She had been leaving food out for the pup and had posted on the Greeley Lost & Found Pets page, but no one had come forward. That’s when we stepped in.

Our first priority was confirming the dog’s routine, so we deployed trail cameras. For two consecutive nights, the little girl returned to eat. Once we established her pattern, we set a box trap. She desperately wanted the food but wasn’t quite comfortable enough to fully enter the trap.

Meanwhile, Shayna was able to locate the owners and learned this sweet girl had been missing since February.

Knowing we needed a different approach, we replaced the box trap with our small Missy trap. At 8:00 p.m., she entered the trap and was briefly captured. Unfortunately, during the transfer, a distraction allowed her to slip past my husband and run off again.

We knew she was exhausted, hungry, and likely to return. We refreshed the bait and left the trap set. At 1:30 a.m., she came back and entered the trap once more. By this point, we had also discovered she had an injured eye, making it even more important to bring her to safety as quickly as possible.

My son and I were leaving for a short vacation in Oklahoma, so Neil took over the recovery efforts. With the help of Tania, the trap was reset, and at 2:50 a.m. on May 22, this resilient little girl was safely captured.

She was reunited with her owners, who were overwhelmed with emotion and could hardly believe she had survived on her own for nearly three months.

Stories like this are only possible because of compassionate community members like Shayna, who took the time to care, report, and ask for help instead of looking the other way. It truly takes a team, and we’re so grateful everyone played a part in bringing this little girl home where she belongs.

Sometimes you have to think outside of the bag.
After learning that Millies loves hotdogs Neil converted this garment bag to a hotdog bag for a ground pull bait. Worked like a charm. We redud the top pull bait to the ground pull bait and within 3 hours she was home safe.

Update over due: Bear has his forever family now with a very special family!
Meet Bear-He is looking for long term foster or adopter who has experience with Huskies. Here's his story.
Bear was running at large for months, possibly even a year or longer. He was safely trapped and taken to a shelter for the mandatory stray hold. While there- he shut down. We were able to pull him out, after he was neutered, and with the help of a very special lady- he was able to be placed in a boarding/training facility. He is learning how to dog again. Still weary of his own shadow- but willing to learn. His prior history is unknown. He is fixed and vaccinated.
He does well on leash, good with other dogs, and is good in crate. As with any rescue, and husky, he should be considered a flight risk. He just needs some time and love, and will inevitably become someone's best friend
Message me if you think you might be able to help him

DECOMPRESSION PHASE FOR BEAR:
Bear has been my best friend since his capture from the streets. As we have settled him in a facility to help him decompress, I visit him daily with his favorite 3 plain cheeseburgers from McDonalds….it took Bear at least 2 weeks before he would eat in front of me….he would wait until I left the room to scarf down his burgers…..but now he will eat out of my hand and even lick my hand clean….I was one of the most happiest to see this happen. Around week three I would take a nap with Bear on his Cott, he would roll on his back for me to rub his belly, this was really a huge happy moment, knowing he was feeling comfortable.
Although Bear goes out the same door to complete a short walk and to use the restroom, he tells me when he is ready to go back inside, he is still skittish going in and out, but this is only a month into his decompressing time, I think with the loving care and home he will improve even more in every area of his life. He has enjoyed my HUGS & KISSES. He just wants to be LOVED and HUGGED….and of course his Cheeseburgers………
Bear has enjoyed his car rides to the vet for his check ups….he looks out the window and enjoys the scenery. He is very skittish with people but enjoys other animals being around, never ever has he shown any aggression.
We are looking for that certain person or couple that is willing to help Bear thru his next Journey of life. I am absolutely sure he will make a loving Foster or permanent member to their family.
Because Bear is a VERY SPECIAL companion dog, we would like to see him improve even more than he has now in a home environment. If you are serious about wanting information about Bear please send an email to [email protected] or you may call 720-244-6076 for the details. Our goal is to find a foster or permanent home for July 11, 2024. A home visit will be conducted by the training facility owner, myself and Redneck Rescue to make sure Bear will have the best fit home to continue his journey.

If you are a regular on nextdoor or Facebook you probably know me and my husband Neil as Redneck Rescue, as well as some of my friends. You may have even contacted us for help or advice. Our team is a small group of volunteers who do this out of our own pockets. We don't get paid, nor do we take rewards, getting a pet home or off the streets safe is the best reward. Our most recent recovery mission has been for a husky mix in the Hill N Park area that was dumped out there. He’s been seen in the same area since last spring- almost a year now!! Animal control has been contacted numerous times, but he knows their vehicles and hides. The community in the area has tried with loaned traps - but he’s too smart to go in that! Finally someone reached out to us. We set cameras to make sure that he was coming around and to pattern him. We had our normal missy trap set- and he was in and out eating all the bait we had. The only issue we had was he was not pulling the trigger we had on the bait. We switched to our electric sensor - placed more bait and waited. We ended up having another dog go in the trap- Bear following- that dog tripped the sensor and the door ended up hitting Bear. After this happened he would not go in the trap. We had tied the door open and kept feeding in hopes that he would give it another go. But instead we had a member of the community tie her dog in the trap and try to catch him herself. This really made him leery of the trap. We then just had to remove the door panel altogether and condition him to go in to get the food. This has resulted in us having to modify and redesign our original trap. The costs have added up quickly (gas, trap food, trail cams, slip leads, batteries, locks, etc). We don't even keep track because we do whatever it takes. But our need really is more materials to modify our equipment, which isn't cheap. Long story short, many many long hours, crazy weather, and a couple hundred dollars latter, we are setting the trap again. So much goes into searches, tracking and learning the dog's patterns, guiding the owners or the community, and having the right supplies and equipment. So we asking for donations to help in this recovery.

Please feel free to share the link. If you would like to donate or help in some other way please message me.
Even if you can't donate we still want to thank everyone for the amazing support always provided, so many of these searches wouldn't have been successful without the community.

And for those considering reporting this post for whatever reason- we provide a community service, and all money will go towards equipment and supplies. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out. Thank you 🐾🐾🐾
