All that plasma we made got put to use! Here we have a 14 lb reindeer calf born out of Nutmeg. We know from previous years that Nutmeg is a great mom to her calves, but they sometimes struggle with passive transfer. This means they don’t get all the antibodies they need from her colostrum. We give plasma orally to her calf to ensure it will absorb everything it needs in those first critical hours.

Today we collected blood from our reindeer to spin down to plasma. We can then use that plasma to help support calves by providing antibodies. Stay tuned for more on the what/how/why we perform this collection. All done with the guidance of our amazing veterinarian! Shoutout Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic!
