In 1878, an American diplomat in Bangkok decided to send an unusual gift to the White House: a Siamese cat.

David B. Sickels, who was serving at the U.S. consulate in Bangkok, had heard that First Lady Lucy Hayes was a devoted cat lover. So instead of sending flowers or a traditional diplomatic gift, he apparently thought, "Why not send her a cat?"

And not just any cat.

Sickels arranged for a Siamese cat to make the long journey to America by sea and rail. She eventually arrived in Washington in 1879, becoming what is widely regarded as the first Siamese cat known to have reached the United States.

The cat came with an actual formal letter of introduction. Sickels explained that he had chosen one of the finest specimens he could find and believed it was the first attempt to send a Siamese cat to America.

Lucy Hayes initially gave her the wonderfully old-fashioned name Miss P***y. But after getting to know her new feline guest, she eventually renamed her Siam.

Imagine the diplomatic paperwork involved in sending a cat halfway around the world—and then imagine that cat arriving at the White House and immediately becoming the center of attention.

Siam may have been a diplomatic gift, but she also helped introduce Americans to one of the world's most distinctive and beloved cat breeds.

Long before cats were internet celebrities, one very special Siamese cat had already made her way into the White House.

Ancient Egyptians worshipped cats. We just cancel plans because they fell asleep on us, save every box for 'just in case', buy food they now suddenly hate, and have 8,000 pictures of them in the same sleeping pose. So, basically... nothing's changed. 😂🐾
