A chapter here has come to a close. 13 years ago I brought my six horses to their forever home at Sunny Meadows. In that time, they have one by one crossed the rainbow bridge. The last one to cross was my beautiful Suzy today. Although I knew this day would come sooner than later, it was something I have struggled with for some time. It's been almost a year since she was diagnosed with sidewinders syndrome. I never gave up on her and did everything I could possibly do to keep her comfortable this past year. She had a very strong will to keep going. Unfortunately, yesterday and today it was evident that her body just couldn't keep up. She picked the spot and I let her go peacefully with dignity. They say a Heart Horse is a once in a lifetime horse, however, I have been blessed with more than one Heart Horse.
The Challenger Heart Horse (The Teacher of Humility)
The Role: A difficult, stubborn, or highly sensitive horse that tests your patience and skills.
The Impact: While frustrating, this horse forces you to become a better, more empathetic equestrian by exposing the flaws in your technique.
So many times I wanted to give up through the years and I doubted myself I'd be able to bring Suzy to her full potential. Boy, did we prove that wrong and man did we make so many memories. My chapter with Suzy closes but our story will live on with everything she has taught me. It has been a struggle to move on to a new horse and start over. Even though my heart is broken, this is Suzy letting me know it's ok to move on, take everything I've learned with her and begin a new chapter with Stormy.
It's been a wonderful ride these last 17 years and I'll never forget you. Thank you Margie O'Donnell Averell for this horse, I'm forever grateful. Until we meet again my friend 💖
