Socialization isn’t just something you put your dog through it is a foundational block to every step you do after. This weekend
our two pups went out to NAMA’s Regional Qualifier in Aiken, South Carolina. They got the exposure to being handled by strangers, dogs in all levels of excitement, and water exposure. High energy environments and training neutrality is important.

Once you have the potty training and basics down the next step is to take your Service Dog In Training out into pet friendly public spaces. You should already be doing that for desensitization and socialization but now we add extra rules. Starting at home you teach loose leash walking and heeling. Once solid, that criteria is asked in the new space. Use treats and lots of praise for your Service Dog In Training. Your pup will eventually understand that this is necessary in this environment and start offering it automatically. That is the ideal but will take time even after step one for most pups. Heeling and being confident in new pet friendly environments gets you ready for step two which we will share once Trova reaches it.
