🐾 EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: DO YOU HAVE A PLAN FOR YOUR PETS? 🐾
When emergencies happen, we often have very little time to make decisions. Whether it’s a hurricane, house fire, evacuation, or unexpected medical emergency, having a plan for your pets can make all the difference.
❤️ Here are 10 things every pet family should consider:
🐕 1. Prepare a Pet Emergency Kit
Include at least 7 days of food, water, medications, bowls, waste bags, cleaning supplies, and a pet first-aid kit.
🏷️ 2. Update Identification
Make sure your pet wears identification with your current phone number. Verify that microchip registration information is up to date.
📋 3. Keep Important Records Together
Have copies of vaccination records, medical information, prescriptions, and recent photographs of your pets. Store digital copies on your phone, too!
🚗 4. Plan Your Evacuation
Identify pet-friendly hotels, shelters, and possible evacuation destinations BEFORE an emergency occurs. Not every emergency shelter accepts pets.
🦮 5. Keep Leashes, Harnesses, and Carriers Accessible
Even normally calm pets may panic during emergencies. Cats and small animals should have secure carriers.
🏠 6. Designate a Trusted Backup Caregiver
Choose someone who can access your home and care for your pets if you are hospitalized, injured, or unable to return home.
🐾 7. Practice Emergency Routines
Teach your dog to come when called, comfortably enter a crate or vehicle, and tolerate handling. Practice calmly before these skills become necessary.
💊 8. Plan for Special Needs
Senior pets, animals with medical conditions, and pets requiring daily medications may need additional supplies or accommodations.
📱 9. Create a Pet Emergency Contact List
Include your veterinarian, emergency veterinary hospital, backup caregiver, and local animal services.
❤️ 10. NEVER Leave Pets Behind During an Evacuation
If conditions are unsafe for you, they are unsafe for your pets. Plan ahead so everyone can leave together.
🌴 A SPECIAL REMINDER FOR FLORIDA PET FAMILIES:
Hurricanes aren’t our only concern. House fires, flooding, severe thunderstorms, and unexpected medical emergencies can happen anytime.
A little preparation today can prevent a heartbreaking situation tomorrow.
