Turkey Tail Season: Harvesting Nature’s Medicine!
Fall is a wonderful time to keep an eye out for turkey tail mushrooms (Trametes versicolor), those beautiful, fan-shaped fungi growing in colorful layers on fallen logs and decaying hardwood throughout our forests.
Did you know as well as growing Microgreens, Mi Oh My Farms started over 6 years ago with making turkey tail mushroom extracts? These incredible fungi helped inspire our journey exploring the connection between nature, food, and wellness.
Why are turkey tail mushrooms so fascinating?
🍄 Rich in antioxidants: They contain compounds that help protect cells from damage associated with oxidative stress.
Immune-supporting polysaccharopeptides: Turkey tail contains bioactive compounds, including PSK and PSP, that have been studied for their ability to modulate immune responses and influence inflammation.
Essential to forest health: As decomposers, turkey tail mushrooms help break down dead wood and recycle nutrients back into the soil.
A few tips for harvesting turkey tail:
Look for thin, leathery, fan-shaped caps growing in overlapping clusters on dead hardwood.
Check for distinctive concentric bands of color and a white underside with tiny pores—not gills.
Use a reliable field guide and confirm identification with an experienced mushroom identifier before consuming or processing any wild mushroom.
Harvest selectively, leaving plenty behind to support the forest ecosystem.
Collect only from clean, uncontaminated areas.
At Mi Oh My Farms, we believe nature has so much to teach us—from the hidden world of fungi to the connections between ecosystems and human well-being.
