❌ Taking your puppy to a dog park and hoping they figure it out
❌ Forcing your dog to greet strangers
❌ Making them interact when they’re uncomfortable
❌ Assuming more exposure is always better
❌ Expecting every dog to enjoy playing with other dogs

Socialization should build confidence, not overwhelm your dog.

🐾 WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN TO SOCIALIZE YOUR DOG? Pt. 2

What Socialization can look like:

👋🏾 Meeting people
Different ages, appearances, voices, clothing, and ways of moving.

🐕 Seeing other dogs
Your dog doesn’t have to greet them. Learning to calmly walk past another dog is SOCIALIZATION.

🚗 Experiencing new environments
Cars, parks, stores, sidewalks, elevators, patios, veterinary offices and new homes.

🔊 Hearing new sounds
Vacuum cleaners, traffic, doorbells, construction, children playing, fireworks and household noises.

🦮 Learning how to exist around distractions
Squirrels. Bikes. Skateboards. Strollers. Cats. Other dogs. People.

🧘🏾‍♂️ Learning neutrality
This is HUGE.

Your dog doesn’t have to love everything.

They need to learn:
“I see it. I’m okay. I don’t have to react.”

Took Oden out for his first little adventure. He is a very shy, skittish and uncertain rescue from Mexico adopted by my neighbor.

Socialization does NOT mean your dog needs to play with every dog they meet.

It means teaching your dog how to feel safe, stay confident, and appropriately navigate the world around them.

A well-socialized dog can experience new things without feeling like they have to react to everything.

We wanted to share this story about our adopted puppy. Oden. At home, he’s just one of the BOOS—his playful, loving personality shines!
But when guests arrive, even people who visit often, it’s a different story. He hides, barks from his hiding spot, and sometimes shakes when someone approaches. He’s a sweet little puppy who needs help feeling comfortable with people beyond his family.

Puppy Success Doesn’t Happen by Accident🐾

Bringing a puppy home is just the beginning. What happens next can shape your relationship for years to come. 🐾

At Kenai’s House, we believe successful adoptions require more than finding a loving home. They require education, preparation, consistency and ongoing support.

Here are five tips to help you and your puppy get off to a great start.

1. START WITH DECOMPRESSION. 🏡
Your puppy has just entered a new environment filled with unfamiliar sights, sounds and smells. Keep the first few days calm. Establish a safe space, limit overwhelming introductions and allow your puppy to settle in at their own pace.

2. BUILD A ROUTINE. ⏰
Consistent feeding, potty breaks, rest, play and training help puppies understand what to expect. A predictable routine also helps you recognize their needs.

3. TRAIN WITH PATIENCE AND POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT. 🐕
Puppies aren’t born knowing our household rules. Reward the behaviors you want to see, keep training sessions short and age-appropriate, and remember that learning takes repetition.

4. SOCIALIZE THOUGHTFULLY. ❤️
Socialization isn’t about meeting every person and dog. It’s about creating positive, age-appropriate experiences with different sights, sounds, surfaces and environments. Follow your veterinarian’s guidance on safe exposure before your puppy is fully vaccinated.

5. ASK FOR HELP BEFORE YOU FEEL OVERWHELMED. 🤝
You don’t have to figure everything out alone. Early guidance can help address challenges before they become bigger problems. Reach out when you need support.
