When owning any animal it is VERY important you find the right vet even if you have to go through several!! Do not settle for a vet when it comes to your pets.
This was our sweet Aggie days before passing and seeing several vets he was only 6 months old when we got him and finding a GOOD exotic vet is VERY important for these guys they come with a long list of health problems and it seems that list gets longer and longer by the year.
Here is what happen to him, we got Aggie from a pet supplies plus in March is 2025 after our sweet Finn passed away, on June 2nd I noticed he wasn’t playing much wanted to be held and was sleeping like he was tired which at first glance would be normal if you don’t know your ferret but I knew him he played he was young playful full of life but not that day, I called what I thought was a good vet but they told me the exotic vet was not in that day even though I expressed it as emergency they didn’t care the vet was not coming in that day.. so I called my second choice vet rushed him in and the very first thing I noticed is the doctor called him a “cat” constantly.. $150 later they said he had COVID sent us home with antibiotics. My gut feeling knew that was wrong I searched online his symptoms but with ferrets the illnesses they carry come in similar forms so I was lost. That night he slept with me in bed he was oddly warm I checked his temp 106 very high very dangerous for a ferret I was crying I was rushing to cool him down with cold water rags and frozen water bottles just til the morning, he made it through the morning I called the vet back told them what was going on they still refused to see me told me go to this hospital that’s all we can do… I rushed him to said vet where they took X rays, yes X-rays no blood work no nothing gave him fluids and told me he had insulinoma I argued back with the doctor said no that’s not this he said yes here is some meds walked out and would not speak to again I talked to his nurse who stated they had no idea about ferrets and they doctor had left for the day to call back if he gets worse $600+ later and medicine we went home.
June 6th I called the doctor back he was “busy” reception said he would call back he never did…
