Salem update! He did great for him amputation and is on his way home now. 🙂

Once he was sedated, I could examine him more closely without fear of hurting him. Turns out his arm was more damaged than I originally thought. His shoulder, elbow, and wrist were all fused and immovable. In the picture, that’s the way his arm always was, with all the joints bent.

You can see how enlarged the area below the elbow is, where he was putting weight on sensitive skin that was never meant to be a walking surface. It eventually rub it raw and became infected. This is the exact reason why we almost always take the entire limb when performing an amputation in pets. If you leave a stump, they will walk on it and do more damage and cause pain and infections.

Salem is a lucky boy!!

Today’s feel good story!

Bartlett cat lovers united to make a plan for this stray cat that wandered up to a house yesterday. He was clearly injured and in need of help. Through the aide of ACO Chey White, local cat advocates Micky K Morrison and Dawn Burt, he found his way to us today.

Salem, as his rescuers are calling him, has a chronic injury to his left arm which makes it twist inward. He “walks” on his left elbow which has caused a giant, open and infected pressure sore in that area.

There is no fixing the bony injury that is causing the deformity of his leg. The only way to relieve him is to perform an amputation, which we will do tomorrow (along with neutering and vaccinating!). Luckily, his rescuer is willing to give him a chance at a cushy indoor life.

Amazingly, this stray intact tom cat is SO SWEET and is going to be the best tripod companion. ❤️

Missy got a check up today! For anyone brave enough to have seen her first wound pictures, you can check the updated wound in the comments. I am actually so impressed with how well it is looking. It was a GIANT hole and took so much effort to start down the path of healing. But she is happy and doing great!

Guess who got to go home today??

Missy still has a long road to full recovery but she has been cleared to be back home where she has been deeply missed!!

It was a busy day!

I treated Missy at 6:30 am because I had another clinic to attend. Her wounds actually look WAY better this morning - thank you everyone for thinking of her - it’s working!

When leaving, I nearly hit two dogs in the parking lot while backing up! One ran right into my arms and I got him settled in the shelter as staff still hadn’t arrived. Fortunately, his owner was looking for him and reclaimed him (the other dog did not belong to him…).

Then I headed to a TNR day with Ferallife Guards…where a cat literally gave birth in the trap waiting for surgery! 😳

After the clinic, I stopped by the shelter again to treat Missy. She is SUCH a good girl! She rolls over and lets me clean her wounds and apply creams. She doesn’t love the hydrotherapy, but everything else she is fine with!

We are making quite slow progress with Missy this week. She managed to figure out how to lick part of her wounds so she got an even BIGGER cone of shame. The area on her belly has been nearly impossible to bandage but doggie diapers are finally doing the trick. She is now on her THIRD type of antibiotic as we struggle to get the infection under control. She is getting multiple different medications, as well as bandage changes and hydrotherapy 2 to 3 times a day…which she hates 😞

But despite this, it IS healing, just very very slowly. At least we aren’t losing ground anymore.

She is still just a delight to be around and you can tell she is feeling better. She has pep in her step and even wanted to chase a ball tonight!
