October Client Education Seminar

Join Dr. Sarah Humphreys on Thursday, October 15th for an educational event on PSSM and muscle diseases. In this seminar, we'll discuss a few of the more common muscle diseases that affect our horses, from clinical signs to diagnosis and effective management. Some of the diseases we'll be chatting about will include: polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM types 1 and 2), myosin heavy chain myopathy (MYHM), and more. If you have a specific muscle disease you want to learn more about, drop it in the comments!

Refreshments and good company will be provided as always!

About our speaker:
Dr. Sarah Humphreys is a large animal internal medicine specialist with a passion for teaching both veterinarians and veterinary students. Following veterinary school, she trained at UC Davis, University of Pennsylvania, and Oregon State University under some of the best equine internists and ultrasonographers. She spends her time developing new CE for veterinarians, helping veterinarians with tough internal medicine cases either in-person or virtually, and teaching veterinary students anywhere from Canada to the Caribbean on a locum basis.

The Willamette Valley grass just loves the rain too much! Let this be your reminder that grass contains a lot of extra sugars during fall, which can lead to some painful conditions for your horse if not managed properly.

September Client education event!

Join us Thursday, September 17th! We'll be hosting longtime professional horse trainer, Scott DePaolo! Our events usually give the attendee a veterinarian's perspective, but it's about time we also heard from a trainer! Scott is a well-respected trainer, planning to break down common behavioral problems in horses and how he would begin to assess the horse and start changing the conversation. No matter the kind of horse you have, you will pick up some great knowledge here!

About our speaker:
Scott DePaolo is a certified clinician of CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association).
He is also certified as a pack and trail clinic instructor, Western and English instructor, EFM instructor, CHA site certifier, and is a Certified Equine Specialist with the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association.

Since the early 2000's, Scott has worked on an equine assisted psychotherapy team using horses to help heal troubled youth and recovering adults.

Scott has worked in the horse industry in a variety of roles since 1982. He has managed and operated Butte Creek Scout Ranch for the Boy Scouts of America for over 25 years. Butte Creek is a working ranch that specializes in western trail rides and extended pack trips for all ages both for the Boy Scouts of America and their families.

Scott has a deep belief in the positive effects of experiential learning and that horses can be used to build character and teach positive personality characteristics. He believes that horses make the teaching of many key personal character traits much more natural and that good horsemanship leads to good "humanship" (A word from Scott's personal dictionary).

His hobbies include training bridle horses, competing in ranch roping, reining, and working cow horse events as well as traveling to both teach and participate in ranch horsemanship and roping clinics.

Please join long-time professional trainer Scott DePaolo as he discusses common behavioral issues among horses & how we should approach them

Our sweet Rory ❤
While Rory technically belonged to the Wickliffe family, he was treasured and adored by all. He would come into work every day with Dr. Wickliffe to help oversee the office duties. Rory was also Cascadia Equines official office greeter. If you have been to the clinic to pick up meds, bring your horse in, or attend one of our client educations, it is very likely you've met Rory. You may have been blessed with Rory snuggles when you walked in the door, he may have tried to persuade you out of food at a client education, he was always there.
Rory was fantastic emotional support around the clinic. Any time there was a sad case, a challenging day, or something else behind the scenes, he was there in silent comfort. Giving you unconditional love, as only a dog can. He never ran low on his supply of love, or joy. Every delivery of supplies or medications provided him with the exciting opportunity to steal the packaging material and take his time ripping it to shreds. And no one ever DREAMT of eating a cheese stick without paying the "Rory Tax." Even while he aged and grew slower, his light and love never wavered.
Thank you for all the smiles you provided, Rory. Cascadia Equine will not be the same without you, and we will miss you beyond words.
