Rebels Rescue is a foster-based 501(c)3 animal rescue dedicated to saving the lives of homeless pets in Hillsborough County and the Greater Tampa Bay area. Our goal is to end unnecessary euthanasia by pulling the highest risk pets from the county's high-kill shelter and placing them in our foster homes where they will receive the love, attention and care they deserve while they await adoption. All

pets receive appropriate vet care in addition to being spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped prior to becoming available for adoption. We host bi-weekly adoption events at Pet Supermarket in South Tampa and a monthly Cats, Crystals & Crafts event the 3rd Sunday of every month at Southern Brewing in Seminole Heights. We rely solely on donations from the public to continue our mission of saving the lives of at-risk pets. Meet Mrs. Alfie Meeps — or “Mam” ❤

At 14 years old {yes, 14!!!}, she's one of the eldest cats in our foster care and she’s one well-traveled lady with quite the tail to tell.

Originally adopted in Illinois in 2012, Mam came to Florida 🌞 with her adopter many years ago. Unfortunately, she was given to a friend when the adopter could no longer care for her. That friend later passed away from cancer. It was believed she was being cared for by the friend’s husband in Palm Harbor — but in early January, Mam was discovered all the way in Ybor!!

She came to us anemic, dehydrated, and covered in fleas, mites, and scabs.

Recent bloodwork showed signs of a possible endocrine disorder, and her urinalysis suggests possible kidney disease. On top of that, Mam also has grade 3 out of 4 dental disease! She struggles to eat hard food and is very particular about wet food. One thing she’s not picky about though? Carbs. Don’t leave bread sitting out — Mam will tear it apart! 🙀

After a 2nd opinion and review of her bloodwork, she's green lighted for the dental she desperately needs!

In the meantime, you can catch Mam at our upcoming adoption events fundraising for herself and advocating for senior pets. If you ask her, she’ll tell you she’s best in show. She loves soaking up attention and sitting up front to watch all the people — and doggies — walk by.

• Clumping litter — not glamorous, but Mam goes through quite a bit due to her kidney function

We counted… twice.
16 teeth removed between two foster pets this week totaling over $1,300 in vet bills for us 🙀

Our sweet “forever foster” Harriet, with her adorable little wobble, turned 10 back in August. No one ever suggested she needed dental work — but we recently noticed this girl was nearly all gums along the bottom. She had 9 extractions in total! Some were just removing roots from teeth already missing, while others required removing the entire tooth.

Ms. WJ Bologna is believed to be only about five years old, but already had years of damage done to her teeth. She came to us in December missing a couple teeth and even had one removed during her spay. Thankfully, her foster realized something still wasn’t right. This 6-lb nugget ended up needing 4 surgical extractions and 3 simple extractions and has significant wear on her back teeth — likely from years of chewing on something like a crate.

Dentals are one of the most expensive forms of ROUTINE care, but they simply can’t be ignored. Poor dental health doesn’t just affect eating and grooming — it can impact the entire body and lead to serious internal issues. And it isn’t always age-related. We’ve seen young pets with severe dental disease and older pets with great teeth.
