Maple is looking to add more deer recoveries to her resume! Tracking in northern Indiana.

Happy hunter and very happy hound dog!
We have tracked a lot of deer that are still walking this year. It’s nice to be able to reward Maple with an easy 150yrd track and we know she will get to put her mouth on a deer.

Another proof of life!! Tracked this one after hunter lost trail in the snow and snow was still coming down. Put Maple at point of loss and almost immediately knew it wasn’t going to be good. She couldn’t pick up a line and we end up looking in every direction. Usually that means it’s still walking but I questioned her because of the snow. I need to stop questioning her. She knows what she’s doing.

Maple and I have tracked 5 high shoulder shots since Saturday totaling about 11 miles walked. Pretty sure all are still walking but I 100% know this one is. Made some handling mistakes. Should have backed out immediately but we didn’t and bumped this deer off its bed. 24 hrs after shot, no blood in bed. I’m hoping this hunter sees him again soon 🤞🏻.

Maple had a big day today! First track was almost completely untouched by the hunter. Knew he hit back so backed out last night and went to look for blood this morning. Found some but got a little spotty so he called for Maple. Maple was on his deer in 11 minutes. He probably could have found this deer on his own but Maple was happy he called her.
Track #2 the hunter knew he hit low on Friday evening. Went out Saturday and bumped it. We went out and tracked to last blood and a bit farther and had to pause for permission to cross onto another property. Maple wanted to GO! Got permission and tracked another 100? yards and spotted a dead deer. After smelling him we decided it wasn’t his deer. This one had been dead awhile. 🤢. Maple put her nose back on the track and in about 50 more yards we walked up to the correct deer. 2 happy hunters and definitely 1 happy hound dog!

30 hour old track and conditions are terrible for tracking but we got one. Thank goodness this deer found its way near a creek so we could take a quick cool off break before we finished the track.

First proof of life! We tracked this deer this last Monday 24hrs after shot. It was hot and we had to take a couple water breaks but after we got to last blood Maple took a line that felt good but her excitement fizzled out fairly quick. She said she was done and felt like she was telling me it’s still walking. Or she was just too hot to continue. Well he’s still walking and I’m super excited to get these confirmations that I can trust my dog!

Figured I better make sure the nose still works. Looks like it’s working just fine! Me on the other hand can’t make it through a track without trying to injure myself. Stepped directly into a groundhog hole.

2024 was a SLOW season for us but we enjoying every minute we had tracking those deer! Here are the stats.

Farthest recovered track : .6 miles
Biggest buck : 163 inches 220+ lbs

Easy track for tonight. 70yrd shot after 4 misfires. The 5th “Hail Mary” shot connected. This hunter was madder than a hornet 🐝 after all those misfires but he’s happy now😂. And of course Maple is a happy hound dog!!
