๐ŸŒŸ Patient Spotlight: Atlas ๐ŸŒŸ
Atlas presented to us on June 9th as a transfer from Bridges Park Animal Hospital in Morehead City. Earlier that afternoon, Atlas had been diagnosed with severe heatstroke, arriving with a temperature too high to register and showing significant neurological symptoms. The team at Bridges worked quickly to stabilize him for transport, and his owners got him to us as fast as possible.
When Atlas arrived, he was in critical condition. He was covered in petechiae (small bruises caused by an inability to clot normally), vocalizing, and unaware of his surroundings. Knowing that every minute mattered, our team immediately began aggressive treatment. Atlas received multiple fluid boluses, multiple plasma transfusions, continuous cardiac and blood pressure monitoring, and extensive bloodwork monitoring.
The following day, Atlas developed acute aspiration pneumonia and complications related to an elongated soft palate which also may have complicated his heat stroke event. He had to be intubated to protect his airway and provided oxygen support which required one on one intensive care monitoring.
Our overnight team worked tirelessly to support Atlas through this setback. By the following morning, he was already showing signs of improvement Atlas made it clear that he was ready to start moving again! After being immobile for several days, he decided he wanted to go for a walk. Throughout the day, he continued to improve, was weaned from oxygen support, began eating on his own, and his bloodwork showed encouraging progress.
Over the following days, with the love of his mom, the dedication of his doctors, and the around-the-clock care from his nursing team, Atlas continued to exceed expectations. He quickly became known for his love of soft beds, good food, and his beloved Lamb Chop toy.
Today, Atlas is back home with his family near Raleigh, NC, and continues to do well.
Atlas, we are so proud of you. Thank you for reminding us why we do what we do. We love you and wish you a continued recovery filled with treats, cuddles, and adventures. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

Happy 4th of July Eve! โค๏ธ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™

With all the fun and festivities tomorrow, we'd like to share a few important reminders to help keep your pets safe.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Watch the Heat
Temperatures have the potential to reach 100ยฐF tomorrow. Hot weather can quickly lead to heat stroke, so be sure your pets have access to shade, fresh water, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day.

๐ŸŒŠ Water Safety
If you're spending time on the water, please monitor your pet closely for salt water and sand ingestion. Both can be life-threatening and require immediate veterinary attention.

๐ŸŒฝ Skip the Corn on the Cob
While it may seem like a tasty treat, corn cobs can cause life-threatening intestinal blockages if ingested. Keep them out of your pet's reach.

๐ŸŽ† Firework Safety
Store fireworks where curious pets cannot access them, and keep dogs on a leash during walks, as loud noises can cause even well-trained pets to bolt.

๐Ÿ’Š Help Anxious Pets Early
If your pet is fearful of fireworks or loud noises, give the first dose of any prescribed anti-anxiety medication tonight, as directed by your veterinarian. Starting medication before the fireworks begin is often the most effective approach.

Have a fun, safe, and Happy Independence Day! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Patient spotlight: Mr.Storm!!!
Storm presented to us on June 1st for gastrointestinal (GI) signs, He was assessed and admitted to the hospital by Dr.Oldham. On presentation, Storm was pretty spunky for us (he tried everything he could to break out of his kennel) . In the next few days following, Storm was rapidly declining in hospital.

June 2nd, Storm was ultrasounded by our internist, Dr Ryan Bray. The finding of the ultrasound led to the diagnosis of pancreatitis. On June 3rd and 4th, Storm was under the care of our criticalist/medical director, Dr. Christina Whitley. Storm had a temporary feeding tube placed and our team worked hard around the clock to improve his symptoms. Dr. Whitley worked very closely with Storm's owners on getting together a reasonable plan of action. During the June 4th shift, Storm was finally eating on his own and his mobility was improving!

Dr. White and Dr. Hood continued to care for him and on the morning of June 6th, Storm went home since he was eating on his own pretty consistently. In communication with the owner in the last few days they have noted that he is recovering well comfortably at home. Storm was so loved here in clinic and we could not be any happier with his recovery process.
