Below is a bit more information about our CGC Class!
***Level 1 is required.
The American Kennel Club (AKC)’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program is designed to recognize dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. This program stresses responsible dog ownership for owners and training and good manners for dogs.
Our CGC Prep class can help you and your pup prepare for the (optional) test to become CGC Certified!
We will cover the following skills:
1. Accepting a Friendly Stranger: The dog allows a friendly stranger to approach and speak to the handler, showing no fear or undue excitement.
2. Sitting Politely for Petting: The dog sits politely while being petted by a stranger.
3. Appearance and Grooming: The dog allows a person (like a groomer or veterinarian) to inspect their ears, front paws, and brush them.
4. Out for a Walk (Loose Leash): The handler demonstrates control while walking the dog, including turns and a stop.
5. Walking Through a Crowd: The dog walks politely through a group of people, showing only casual interest.
6. Sit and Down on Command/Staying in Place: The dog demonstrates they can sit and down on cue, then stays in place while the handler moves 20 feet away.
7. Coming When Called: The handler calls the dog from 10 feet away.
8. Reaction to Another Dog: The dog behaves politely when another handler and dog approach, shake hands, and move on.
9. Reaction to Distraction: The dog remains calm when faced with distractions like a dropped chair or a passing jogger.
10. Supervised Separation: The dog stays calm for 3 minutes while the owner is out of sight.
