‼️New Class Alert!!

This Fall, we are releasing a brand-new class,
🐾Off Leash Foundations!!🐾
Starts Sunday, October 4th!
(Level 1, Wild Thing, or by trainer permission required)

This class is perfect for giving both YOU and your dog the confidence to have off leash adventures, as the heat starts to taper off and Fall starts to creep in!

Class Description:

"We want your dog to safely have freedom to run and play in nature, but first we need skills to get there!

In this class we’ll teach you:
- How to start over with your recall and build it solidly from the ground up
What equipment we recommend for training and management
- How to teach skills like automatic check in, rebound, stay, directional changes, passing by others and "not for you!"
- How to define and manage an appropriate radius throughout your walk
- Games to play to build a bond with your dog outside and help them want to interact with you
- How to train around distractions like wildlife and other dogs
- Troubleshooting options for what to do when you don't get the response you need.

✨Just a couple of spots left in our upcoming Wild Thing and Agility classes starting next weekend!!✨

Next Sunday, August 30th, we have two classes starting that have just a couple of spots left!

WILD THING: 10:30am: 5 week class!
For teenage dogs (or older!), who are familiar with the basics (sit, down, stay, come), but needs help learning to stay focused around distractions, polite greetings and not jumping on others!

FOUNDATION AGILITY: 11:30am, 5 week class!
A super fun class (Level 1 required), where we’ll show you how to warm up and cool down your dog, and teach you exercises to get you both familiar with agility obstacles such as jumps, tunnels, and planks.

Happiest birthday to the one and only Whitney! Mother, wife, friend, trainer, and one of the best woman I know. Life wouldn’t be the same without our long discussions on dogs, behavior, training, and more. Have the absolutely best birthday Whitney, we love you, and hope you get a lot of Lana and Tessa love!

Off leash in nature 2017 and 2026. Four and six vs thirteen and fifteen. The walks are slower, there’s less digging, there will have to be some recovery, but it’s still important.

Is it a privilege to have the ability to safely have my dogs off leash? Yes.
Did I work incredibly hard to train not just recall but lots of off leash skills? Yes.
Do I believe all dogs deserve access to moving their bodies freely? Absolutely.

It’s not always easy, it’s often not simple. But we can help figure it out together. The training, the logistics, the management to get there. It really is that important. In our experience, a long line is not a good enough substitute. I don’t say this to attack anyone. If it makes you feel upset or uncomfortable, maybe think about why you feel that way for a bit. Our dogs deserve time to move their bodies freely, and it’s our job as their guardians to set them up for that. Reach out, we can help!

Salty Dogs, I’ve always tried to be honest and open with you all throughout the years. I think when you ask people to be brave and vulnerable, to ask for help with their animals, to trust you with their fears and guilt and hopes, it’s important to try to do the same. I think folks working with behavior and training owe it to our clients to show them how we live with our own dogs. Not the fake highly edited bu****it but how we share our lives with our dogs: our mistakes, our challenges, our hard decisions.

This year has been personally extremely difficult for me. Tessa’s health decline has been one of the hardest parts for me. Tessa was the first dog I volunteered to train at Peace Ridge Sanctuary She changed what Salty Dogs would become, shaped my motherhood, and has been my very best friend. We have spent countless hours in the woods and on the couch together. But it still doesn’t feel like enough.

Tessa is still with us but we don’t know for how much longer. Having quality of life that involves joy and movement is important and I promised her I would keep that thought with me every day.

This is the preface to say: Salty Dogs has run differently this year, but it has run and run well and that is not because of me. If anything it’s despite me. Jasmine and Sarah and Anna and Sarah (I know, I didn’t pick their names) have been more than I could ever dream for in a perfect team. They have kept things rolling and growing into our biggest (and also tenth!) year despite my absences and challenges.

Grateful doesn’t feel deep enough to describe how I feel for them and for all of our SD family. Thank you for your kindness and patience and compassion during this time. Tessa and I and my family and our team love you (Lana does too a little but she won’t admit it)

FREE! Woofers Anonymous Meeting at 3:00pm at the Salty Dogs Studio - This Sunday, August 16th!

We are are hosting another "Woofers Anonymous" meeting, led by Whitney Thurston, CDBC. And whether you've joined us before or if it would be your first time, we would love to see you there! 😊

This workshop is a free, humans-only meeting for folks who are dealing with reactivity in their dogs. This could be reactivity that stems from fear, from frustration, from lack of socialization. It could be directed towards unfamiliar dogs in the world, new people on the street, cars, bikes, etc. If your dog is lunging, pulling, barking, growling, panicking, escalating, embarrassing you, this meeting is for you.

Almost a month ago, while we were still dealing with Tessa’s recent collapse and hospitalization, I came home one evening to Lana throwing up and falling over. She couldn’t walk and by the next morning her head was tilted to one side and her eyes were twitching back and forth uncontrollably. It was one of the most horrifying things I’ve seen and we were prepared for the worst.

We found out she had idiopathic vestibular syndrome, something that is not uncommon in senior dogs but which I had never heard of. Most dogs get better on their own in a couple of weeks. She didn’t eat anything for five days, despite many interventions, and we thought again we were about to lose her. Finally, finally I was able to hand feed her some cat food (thanks Jasmine!)

She had lost a lot of weight and muscle, which is not ideal for an almost 15 year old dog, but I’m so grateful for her recovery. She’s not as fast and still wobbly at times, but largely back to herself. Sharing because in talking about this I’ve realized most folks have also not heard of the very scary but thankfully usually not too serious illness.
