A BREEDER’S WORST NIGHTMARE — AND WHY MY PROTOCOL WILL NOT CHANGE.
Recently, a breeder had an entire litter of Borzoi puppies stolen from her yard and reportedly sold. Let that sink in.
As a fellow breeder, my heart breaks for her. We pour our hearts into these dogs. We lose sleep, carefully plan our breedings, nurture our mamas, and spend countless hours raising these babies. They aren’t products sitting on a shelf. They are living beings we love and are responsible for protecting.
Unfortunately, situations like this are exactly why many breeders no longer allow prospective families into their homes to meet their puppies. I understand that fear. I truly do. We all want to protect our dogs, our families, and the babies entrusted to us.
But here at Sugar & Spice Homestead Poodles, our protocol will not change.
Our puppy families will always be welcome in our home. I believe meeting the people raising your puppy, seeing where your puppy is growing up, and experiencing our program firsthand are important parts of building trust. I want our families to feel confident in where their puppy comes from, and I have no intention of sacrificing that transparency because of the actions of others.
That doesn’t mean we take our safety lightly. Quite the opposite.
1.)Our home is monitored. Cameras cover our property and the corners of our home to help protect our family and our dogs.
2.)Our puppies are NEVER left alone. There is always someone here. Our babies are supervised and cared for, and their safety is a responsibility we take seriously.
3.)And please, NEVER show up at our property unannounced. The possibility of being bitten is HIGH.
Not because we have aggressive dogs, but because this is THEIR home. We have protective dogs, and when someone enters their territory unexpectedly, especially when puppies are present, their instincts may kick in. A mother protecting her babies is not something to take lightly.
We welcome our approved puppy families, but visits are arranged in advance for a reason. We respect our dogs, their boundaries, and their instincts, and we expect visitors to do the same.
Transparency and safety can coexist. We can welcome our puppy families into our homes while still taking precautions to protect everything we’ve worked so hard to build.
To the breeder who is living this nightmare, my heart is with you. I hope those babies make it home safely. 💔
And to my fellow breeders: I understand your fear. I understand your precautions. Every program has to make the decisions that feel safest for its own circumstances, and I respect that.
As for us, we will continue to welcome our puppy families into our home, with precautions in place, because that’s what works for our program.
Our doors are open by appointment. Our puppies are protected. And our trust is earned.
Please if you see or hear of Borzoi puppies being sold with RED FLAGS, reach out to the breeder or local police.
