🐾 Want to know how to teach your dog to calm down? 🐾

Start by understanding something we often get backwards…

You cannot calm an animal with excitement.

When your dog is overstimulated, anxious, excited, or out of control, our first instinct is often to talk more, move more, touch more, or give more commands. But sound and movement create energy!!

When your dog is already living in a heightened state, adding more energy doesn’t bring them down—it can push them even higher.

Calm begins with silence.🤫🤐

Stop talking.🤐
Stop repeating commands.🤫
Stop moving around unnecessarily.🏃
Take a breath.🧘‍♂️
Slow yourself down.🐌

Your dog is watching your body language, feeling your energy, and responding to the environment you create.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can teach your dog is not another command… It’s how to do absolutely nothing!!

Sit quietly.
Breathe.
Wait.
Let their nervous system begin to settle.

Then, when the mind is calm, that’s when learning can happen.

Before we ask a dog to control their behavior, we have to help them learn how to control their state of mind.

Silence isn’t the absence of communication.
Sometimes, silence ✨IS✨ the communication.

🐾✨ LULU’S SPOTLIGHT: LOOK AT EVERYTHING THIS GIRL IS LEARNING! ✨🐾

“Hi friends! It’s me… Lulu! 🐶💕

Apparently, I’m learning A LOT. But here’s the secret… I think I’m just playing! 😂

My humans have been teaching me that learning isn’t just about knowing commands. It’s about learning how to THINK, how to make good choices, how to stay calm, how to communicate, and how to handle the world around me.

I’m learning things like:

🧠 Orienting — checking in and paying attention to my person, even when something else is happening.

👀 Chin Rest — offering my chin voluntarily so I can connect with and comfort people who may need me. (This is my first task on my Therapy tasks list!!)

🎯 Impulse control — learning that I don’t have to react to everything I see, hear, or smell.

🐾 Settle — discovering that doing NOTHING can sometimes be the hardest—and most important—thing to learn!

🚪 Thresholds & patience — waiting, thinking, and making good choices before moving forward.

💪🏼 Confidence — learning that new experiences don’t have to be scary when I have someone I trust guiding me❣️

🎓 Therapy-dog skills — learning how to work with my human while also understanding when it’s time to relax and just be a dog.

The coolest part is… My lessons are FUN! 🎉

When my brain is engaged and I’m enjoying the process, I WANT to keep learning.

That’s something my humans have learned too:

✨ Mental work doesn’t have to feel like work.✨

When you make learning fun, you create a dog who is eager to participate, eager to think, and eager to keep trying.

When the brain is learning… the behavior has a chance to change. 🧠🐾❤️

I’m not just learning commands.
I’m learning how to be successful in the world.
I’m pretty proud of myself!! 🥹🐶
