At least once or twice a year, Xena will just decide she doesn't like her grain anymore. It's usually after a good steak of her eating everything after me upping her food.

Well, she's at it again but this time it's just feeling different. I'm trying not to get myself to stressed by it, but it's hard when she's older than dirt. While I don't know what's up, the vet is being kept updated just in case. While all her vitals have been normal, there's just been something meh with her.

She did seem to perk up after banamine and milk of mag, so this evening she got a buffet to determine what was the offending food item and to no surprise she completely ignored her Timothy alfalfa pellets. Hay stretcher, senior, and alfalfa cubes were all acceptable though.

So, I'll keep an eye on her and maybe keep splitting her food up to see if that keeps her happier. Who knows, maybe food can't touch anymore.

We regularly get asked what we need for the horses and thankfully at this moment they are all set on physical items. But our biggest and constant need is hay!

Today is hay day! I'm excited to get our loft filled up before the cold sets in. If you'd like to help, we now have an official hay fund link where you can buy a bale for the ponies! Apple, Pongo, and Xena would be so grateful if you did 🥰 you can find out hay fund link in our bio and buy the ponies a bale!

The heaviest weight isn't the physical.

I've had numerous people lately tell me they don't know how I do it, that it's so much work they're impressed. Truly I never quiet know what to say to that because to me, the daily chores doesn't really feel like a chore, it's just part of it all. Caring for the horses just feels as right as breathing. They are so a part of my life and of me that I don't register the work that goes into it as hard (not to say my body isn't noticing it and my joints don't yell at me for it sometimes).

What's heaviest isn't the physical things I lift and toss or when they do physically lean on me for support. It's the weight of the love.

Loving these beautiful, aging souls is something bittersweet. I feel so privileged to be able to be a part of their golden years, to spoil them with love, to become so a part of their lives that I'm familiar with their little nuances. It comes with the heaviest responsibility though of letting go when it's time. It comes with the challenge of not letting the goodbyes and heartbreak harden you, not letting it build up walls to keep the world out. It takes strength to bear the weight of that love and to refuse to harden in the face of loss and instead choose to love harder for those that come next.

That's the heaviest weight.

This week marks two years since I lost Moon and one year since I had to let Annie go. It's been so heavy on my mind and each time I look at our sweet, ancient Xena, it's all I can think about. Because Xena is old. She's been old for years now. I love her so dearly. Our herd is so attached to her and she to them. I can see the signs of her age catching up to her, but for now she is happy and absolutely surrounded by love.

Every day, they remind me I've learned to carry the heaviest weight and most important weight of them all: love.

We're excited to announce that Indy has officially settled in to his new foster home just across town with our friends at Bracken Hill Farm !

If you've been following Indy's journey you'll remember he was recently given the okay to come off Prascend (though he may eventually need to go back on it). That and his desire to do more, not just hang out with the retirees, I made the choice to find him a place where he can thrive!

Our friends at Bracken Hill seemed like the perfect for! Indy has already decided goats are pretty fun, though alpacas are interesting but don't want his affection. We have no doubt he's going to love their programs and being part of their therapy environment!

Make sure you give them a follow so you can continue to watch Indy's journey! 🥰 Bracken Hill Farm
