Bo the German Shepherd has not had the chance to meet many dogs yet. During his Daytrain he showed me that he really loves friends with the right introductions. He was able to make 5 new friends today!

Stranger Danger:

One of the easiest ways to start building rapport with a fearful dog already in your home is to become a meat vending machine that requires absolutely nothing in return. Carry a treat pouch filled with cooked meat and, as you move around the environment, toss pieces of meat away from you while purposely maintaining a comfortable distance from the dog.

Don’t call them over, reach toward them, wait for eye contact, or ask for any interaction. The chicken isn’t payment for a behavior. It simply appears because you’re there.

Imagine having to live with a big spider when you aren’t a big fan. But, for some reason, whenever that spider is around, free $100 bills start appearing. You don’t have to approach it, talk to it or do anything to make the money appear. Over time, you’d probably start seeing that spider in a very different light.

The same thing can happen with a fearful dog when the valuable resource of chicken or something high value is repeatedly associated with your presence. The scary person starts to become the predictor of something amazing, without putting any pressure on the dog to interact. Sometimes the best way to build trust is to stop trying so hard to earn it.

One of the Leeloo’s besties is back for some play and training. The play has pretty much been non stop since drop off. Now if I can just squeeze in some training 😂

Do you ever step on a dog hair and it ends up sticking into your foot just right that it feels like a piece of glass? Then you try to find it for hours but your feet are so dry because you prioritize everyone else over yourself and haven’t had a pedicure in a year? Asking for a friend.
