Getting a horse through colic surgery is a tremendous investmentโ€”financially, emotionally, and medically. Discharge from the hospital is a major milestone, but it isn't the end of recovery.

Following abdominal surgery, horses may face weeks to months away from normal activity. During that time, they can lose core strength, topline musculature, cardiovascular fitness, mobility, and overall conditioning. For the equine athlete, allowing an incision to heal and preparing the body to safely return to work are two very different things.

Research has demonstrated the potential benefits of structured rehabilitation following colic surgery, including targeted core and abdominal exercises during recovery. The goal is to progressively rebuild strength and function while respecting tissue healing and the recommendations of the surgical team.

Each post-operative rehabilitation plan is individualized to the horse, surgical procedure, stage of healing, intended use, and recommendations of the surgeon. As recovery progresses, the program progresses with themโ€”from controlled movement and targeted exercises to strengthening, conditioning, and ultimately return to work.

Because after investing so much into saving your horse through colic surgery, recovery deserves the same level of thought and medical oversight.

At Rocking E Equine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, rehabilitation programs are
developed and overseen by ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐€๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ž ๐„๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฆ๐š๐งโ€” a board-certified veterinary specialist

in Equine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation.
This means every rehabilitation plan is approached from a veterinary perspective:
understanding the original injury or surgery, evaluating the entire horse, identifying
functional deficits, establishing measurable goals, and continually adjusting the program
as the horse progresses.

From post-operative recovery to orthopedic injury rehabilitation and return to performance,
our goal is not simply to get horses through a period of stall rest.

Rocking E provides one of the regionโ€™s only equine rehabilitation programs with direct
oversight by a board-certified equine sports medicine and rehabilitation specialist โ€”
bringing specialty-level veterinary medicine into every stage of the rehabilitation process.
