🐾 DOG COMMUNICATION IS A TWO-WAY STREET
A dog who is friendly, social, and gets along well with other dogs can still react, correct another dog, or become involved in a fight.
Why?
Because dogs are communicating all the time.
They communicate through their eyes, ears, nose, mouth, tail, movement, posture, scent, pheromones, and whether their body is loose or stiff.
There is so much communication happening that humans simply don’t understand or don’t notice.
Your dog and another dog may have an entire conversation before you ever see a growl.
One dog may communicate:
“Back off.”
If the other dog accepts that communication, they move away and the interaction continues—or ends.
But what happens when the other dog doesn’t understand the correction, ignores it, or simply decides they’re not going to accept it?
They may essentially respond:
“No. YOU back off.”
And now you have a conflict.
A correction is communication.
A fight is what can happen when communication doesn’t resolve the conflict.
This is why a friendly dog can still correct another dog. A dog who normally loves other dogs can still have a disagreement with one. Even dogs who know each other well can have a tussle.
Don’t just watch for the bark, growl, snap, or fight.
By then, you’ve missed a lot of the conversation.
Start learning to watch what the dogs are saying before they get loud. 🐾
