This sad little nugget of a flying squirrel is warming up with rehydration fluids right now.

He was found curled up shivering in the middle of the street in Middleborough last night so was scooped up and brought inside to get warm. He is dehydrated and bony- by weight he is either an older youngster, possibly failing to launch into independence competently, or a sick adult.

He doesn't seem to have any visible wounds or injuries, but once he perks up we'll also do a mobility assessment to confirm he is capable of ambulating normally.

I had the privilege of triaging this late summer bobkitten from East Templeton this morning!

This sweet kit was observed alone and limping across the street when his finder was on her way to work this morning. Very tiny (not to name names, but at less than 1.5kg he's a quarter the weight of my admittedly fat house cat), she had a moment after passing him where she thought "WAIT. I don't think that was a regular cat." so turned around to investigate. And y'all, if he survives then that decision will be the reason why. Full stop, no exaggeration. She is the hero in his story.

He had the visible leg pain of course, but the degree of emaciation this bobcat is experiencing is quite alarming. The poor thing is skin and bones and the fluffy baby fur he hasn't yet outgrown is likely the only reason he has managed the cold we've been having because he doesn't have one ounce of fat on him. He was clearly operating on adrenaline alone because once contained and wrapped up in a blanket he collapsed and remained in that condition, not even able to lift his head to watch what I was doing never mind show any of the bobcatty spiciness he should have been exhibiting. Just a limp little pile of bones 😭

Bobcats are not a species I currently have authorization to keep for a full rehab so this little one was triaged then promptly transferred to Tufts for a more complete workup and further care. If he makes it he will not be old enough for release until after winter so he has a long road in front of him. Wishing him the best of luck!!

Theo, who came in last month emaciated and injured, is home!

He arrived so debilitated and in such delicate condition that receiving release updates from his finder had me particularly emotional. He's back in his home territory where he's been long observed so he can get back to his burrow and the serious business of chipmunking.

We admitted eight white-footed mice over the last few days and if you were one of the finders rest assured that all are doing well so far! Seven babies were found tucked into a pool cover by an employee of the pool company who was closing it up for the season plus one older juvenile who was attacked by an indoor cat. This brings our current mouse headcount to 13 individuals with a total of 24 animals currently in-patient!

Meet Larry!

Larry is a Green Frog with an obvious leg injury found and named by the students and staff at Wildwood Acres in West Brookfield. Larry appears to be female (gender neutral queen) and her right upper hind leg is swollen and stiffened straight back from the hip with her lower leg a little twisted. It took a bit for them to capture her which means the injury is not fresh so I've opted for minimal manipulation of it in order to avoid the chances of worsening anything until her scheduled visit with the vet next week. That appointment will be to assess the injury and to determine if and how to treat it.

The injury has a similar presentation to the Spring Peeper who came in with a dislocated stifle (knee) earlier this year, but we will see what the vet says once in the exam room. In the meantime, she's been getting soaks in amphibian-specific electrolytes and pain meds to keep her comfortable and to hopefully start reducing the visible inflammation to see if that improves her ability to use the affected joints.

Got in this beautiful almost 20lb Common Snapping Turtle today, who was catastrophically injured when she was hit by a car. The car that hit her did not stop, but the landscapers in the vehicle behind them immediately did so then brought her here, deeply upset at both having witnessed it happen and then watching the driver leave without even slowing down.

She suffered many fractures to her carapace, including two running through the middle of her back and which together totalled 30cm in length, affecting more than 80% of her spine. Among other injuries none of her legs worked, her body cavity was continually filling with air in a way that is suspect for lung injuries, and she was badly bleeding. She became nonresponsive after triage and was brought in for a humane euthanasia to end her suffering.

Rest well sweetness.

And please, everyone, remember that turtles are on the move heading to their winter homes so try to keep an eye out!

I admitted six little mice the other day, who were unintentionally disturbed in a nest inside of the finder's shed. A reunite was attempted, but mom did not come back for them before the weather turned and these kiddos got cold and listless so were brought inside for the night then were brought here the next day. Upon rewarming they all perked up, but two of the six remained quite weak and pale in comparison to their siblings. One of those two did not make it, but the other has started to perk up a little bit today so fingers are crossed.

Released this kiddo yesterday, who was found last month shivering next to a pool in Hudson and who arrived with aspiration pneumonia.

She overcame her infection then grew large and old enough for a soft release on site where she will have ongoing access to support feeding while she gets herself established.

Can you believe that this little face turns 40 today?!

I left my job to become a stay-at-home-parent when our little family moved to Los Angeles, with the intent to return back to the job market when our youngest entered school. That ended up coinciding with covid, so I held off and we ultimately returned back to Massachusetts while still figuring out the plan. I sill intended to go back to a normal paying gig when I unintentionally and fortuitously stumbled into the world of wildlife. Not a paying job (sorry hubby!), but a vocation. A passion. A life's path! Three years later and as a family we have no regrets and I can't help but think that that little girl I used to be would be so amazed and proud at what I have accomplished. I know me and my loved ones are! Even if we no longer have a normal basement 😉
