🐱 Many of you already know this one, but for anyone who has ever wondered: what’s with the tipped ear?

An ear tip is the universal sign that a community cat has been spayed or neutered through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). It lets caretakers and trappers know from a distance that the cat has already been fixed and doesn’t need to be trapped again.

So if you spot a community cat with a tipped ear, that little ear tip is a good thing! 💙

Need affordable wellness care for your dog or cat? This week, we'll be offering limited walk-in wellness appointments on:

Because space is extremely limited, we recommend arriving at 7:30 a.m. (without your pet) to receive a number. Then, return at 10:00 a.m. with your pet for check-in. Check-in will take place in numerical order, and patients will be seen throughout the day as they are worked in between scheduled wellness appointments.

💜 Want to reserve a spot instead? Wellness reservations can be made online at CarolHousePetClinic.org/stl. A reservation holds your place for that day, although it does not guarantee you will be seen at that exact time.

Our Community Cat Coordinator, Bonnie, recently shared an analogy that perfectly captures why spay/neuter is such an important part of animal welfare.

There’s an old parable about people standing beside a river when they notice someone struggling in the water.

They rush in to save them. Then another person floats downstream. And another. Soon, everyone is working as hard as they can to pull people from the river.

Finally, someone starts walking upstream.

“Where are you going?” the others ask. “We need help!”

The person replies, “I’m going upstream to find out why they keep falling in.”

Saving lives doesn’t only happen downstream, when an animal is already in need of a home. It starts upstream, with spay/neuter, reducing the number of animals who will need shelter and rescue resources in the first place.

Our shelters and rescues work incredibly hard every day to save animals who need homes. But there will always be another dog or cat coming downstream if we don’t also address how so many animals are entering the system in the first place.

Every spay/neuter surgery prevents future litters. Over time, that means fewer animals entering already overcrowded shelters, more resources available for the animals who are already here, and fewer healthy animals facing euthanasia simply because there isn’t enough space.

At Carol House Quick Fix Pet Clinic, we’ve performed more than 155,000 spay/neuter surgeries since 2012.

One surgery at a time, we’re working upstream to stop pet overpopulation at the source.
