The Owen County Micro-Farm Tours are coming up next Thursday, September 10—and the buses are almost full!

We’re so proud to be both a sponsor and a participating stop for this inaugural event, organized by the Owen County Chamber of Commerce. Guests can choose from two different tour routes featuring nine unique local micro-farms, with opportunities to meet growers, visit with animals, sample local wines and foods, and experience some of the people and places that make Owen Valley so special.

All of the participating farms are looking forward to welcoming full buses of visitors and sharing a little of what makes each one unique. If you’ve been thinking about joining us, now is the time to get your tickets!

No one told Possum and Ray that pigs and sheep aren’t traditionally expected to be buddies—and it’s pretty clear that they wouldn’t have listened anyway.

So today they’re wandering the pasture together, investigating together, and making sure nothing remotely edible has appeared on the ground.

Friendship at a sanctuary doesn’t always look the way you might expect. Sometimes it’s woolly. Sometimes it has a snout. And sometimes it’s simply two neighbors enjoying a little time side by side. Nicely done, boys💚

Some days, it would be easy to lose a little faith in people.

This beautiful boy came to us today through Indianapolis Animal Care Services. In his former life, he was called “Fat Man.” He was kept in a crate so small he could barely turn around, and a stick was used to prod him when his owners wanted him to move.

And yet, against the odds, what arrived at Compass Rose today was an absolute gentleman.

He is sweet. He is gentle. He has the kindest face. And despite having every reason to be wary of the people around him, there is still a softness about him that is almost impossible not to love.

His entire world changed today. Right now, he has no way of knowing that the worst part of his story is behind him. He doesn’t know that there will be room to move and places to explore. He doesn’t know that hands can bring scratches and treats and kindness. He doesn’t know that there are people here who will learn what he likes, what makes him happy, and who he is when he finally feels safe enough to simply be a pig.

But he will.

That is the hopeful part of sanctuary work. We cannot change what happened before an animal reaches us. We cannot make sense of every unkindness. But we can make sure that what comes next is different.

We haven’t chosen his new name yet, but one thing I know for certain is that “Fat Man” was left behind today along with the rest of his old life.

And no one will ever poke him with a stick again.

Welcome home, sweet boy. We’ll show you how good life can be. ❤️🐷

Pig logic: Why buy sunscreen and a swimming pool when you can simply become one with the mud? 🐷

Mud wallowing is actually an important part of piggy self-care. It helps them cool down, protects their skin from the sun, and can provide relief from biting insects. The mud also acts as a physical barrier over the skin, and some soil microorganisms have natural antimicrobial properties.

So yes, they’re filthy. But they’re also cool, moisturized, protected, and living their best lives.

Don’t mind the little one just expanding the resort. 💅
