Before laying the dog on scent, I always have the hunter walk me to the exact spot where the deer was standing when the shot broke. Reconstructing the hit site, checking for initial hair/blood, and verifying the direction of travel gives us the baseline we need before stepping off.

The hardest part of game recovery isn't the tracking—it's knowing when you have to call it off.

My dog tracked right down to the water’s edge where a mess of hoof prints went straight across. She was ready to launch in and finish the job, but the opposite bank was private property and we didn't have permission to cross. As much as it hurts to walk away from a track, respecting property lines and game laws comes first every single time.

We’re pushing into a grid search right here after running out of visible blood on the ground. When you pull an arrow caked in heavy white fat/tallow with little to no blood on it, what does your experience tell you?

When there’s zero blood on the ground, the woods get real big, real fast. It makes recovery incredibly frustrating and difficult for even the most experienced hunters.

​We were called out on this doe after the hunter had already put in a grueling 4-hour grid search with absolutely no luck. The visible sign just wasn't there.

​We put the dog on the ground and let the nose take over. Just over 300 yards later, my dog took us straight to this deer!

​Huge congrats to the hunter for putting in the effort and knowing when to make the call after the trail went cold. When your eyes run out of clues, trust the dog. 🐕🦌🩸

I’d follow this behavior for miles without seeing a single drop of blood. 🐾 When I first started out in tracking dog training, I remember hearing veteran teams talk about following their dog 800+ yards with ZERO physical evidence on the ground. Back then, my mind was completely blown—how in the world could anyone trust a dog that far into the woods without seeing blood, hair, or a track? Fast forward to today, after putting miles behind my girl, I fully get it. When her body language is this locked in, you don't need blood on the leaves to know you're on the line. Real handling experience teaches you to trust the dog's nose over your own eyes every single time.
