How to Choose an Ethical Breeder
Not all breeders are created equal. A cute puppy today can become a lifetime of heartbreak if health, temperament, and proper raising practices aren't prioritized.
Here are a few things to look for when choosing a breeder:
✅ Health testing appropriate for the breed. Not just a vet check, but the recommended genetic and orthopedic testing. Puppies should go home with first vaccinations and a health certificate from a veterinarian.
✅ Puppies raised in a clean, enriching environment with plenty of age-appropriate experiences.
✅ A breeder who can tell you about the temperament, strengths, and weaknesses of their dogs, not just their appearance.
✅ Lifetime support. Ethical breeders don't disappear after the puppy goes home.
✅ A contract that requires the dog be returned to the breeder if the owner can no longer keep it.
✅ Careful screening of buyers. Good breeders care where their puppies end up and aren't afraid to say "no." Honestly, if a breeder turns you down because your lifestyle doesn't meet the needs of that puppy, you should be thanking them.
🚩 Red flags include unwillingness to discuss health testing, pressure to buy quickly, and breeders who seem more interested in collecting deposits than finding the right homes.
The best breeders aren't selling puppies, they're carefully planning and raising future family members. Take your time, ask questions, and remember that a responsible breeder will be interviewing you just as much as you're interviewing them. 🐾
